Dear Community Members:

As we continue to spread our wings we are meeting more and more people. This is always a lot of fun for me especially as we are able to provide adaptive sport and other programs throughout southern California. These past two weeks saw us in Yucca Valley, Palm Desert, Indio, Riverside, Rancho Cucamonga, Corona and Long Beach. We build community wherever we go.

With any community there are always people who leave. On Saturday when I was in Riverside exhibiting at a program on self-determination I saw some dog biscuits offered by what I thought was a young woman named Sarah. In the past I've purchased these dog bites from Sarah at numerous events. However this time there were other people sitting at the table.

A medida que expandimos nuestras alas, conocemos a más y más personas. Esto siempre es muy divertido para mí, especialmente porque podemos ofrecer programas de deporte adaptado y otros programas en todo el sur de California. Estas últimas dos semanas estuvimos en Yucca Valley, Palm Desert, Indio, Riverside, Rancho Cucamonga, Corona y Long Beach. Creamos comunidad dondequiera que vamos.

Sin embargo, en toda comunidad hay gente que se va. El sábado, cuando estaba en Riverside exhibiendo en un programa sobre autodeterminación, vi unas galletas para perros ofrecidas por alguien que pensé que era una joven llamada Sarah. En el pasado, le he comprado estas galletas a Sarah en numerosos eventos. Sin embargo, esta vez había otras personas sentadas en la mesa.

I found out from these people that Sarah had passed a few months earlier at the age of 23. This was a young woman with autism who had built her own business and had left way too early. (This hit me like a gut punch.)

The young woman who has taken over the business is also a person with disability and has decided to continue Sarah's legacy while also building her own business. (You can see Sarah's dog bites in the red bin in the middle of the photo. They will continue to use the same recipe.)

Me enteré por estas mismas personas que Sarah había fallecido unos meses antes a los 23 años. Era una joven con autismo que había creado su propio negocio y se nos fue demasiado pronto. (Esto me dio un golpe en el estómago).

La joven que se ha hecho cargo del negocio también es una persona con discapacidad y ha decidido continuar con el legado de Sarah a la vez que construye su propio negocio. When I arrived back in the Coachella Valley I decided to text Linda Hanna, who as you might know is Tony's wife and Devon's mom. Along with Linda we had been "advertising" to find a donor for Tony who had a very rare form of pre-Leukemia. In a text Linda told me that Tony had passed on Friday evening. (Another gut punch.) Tony had retired from his numerous salon businesses and had been looking forward to a long retirement with his family and friends.

Al regresar al Valle de Coachella, decidí enviarle un mensaje de texto a Linda Hanna, quien, como sabrás, es la esposa de Tony y la madre de Devon. Junto con Linda habíamos estado "buscando" un donante para Tony, quien padecía una forma muy rara de preleucemia. En un mensaje de texto, Linda me dijo que Tony había fallecido el viernes por la noche. (Otro golpe al estómago). Tony se había jubilado de sus numerosos salones de belleza y esperaba disfrutar de un largo retiro con su familia y amigos.

None of us know how long we will be on the earth during this lifetime. I think that all too often we take life for granted, putting off things until "tomorrow". We let relationships slide and don't offer kind words to others and say that we appreciate and/or love them. I'm not sure that we care enough about others in our community and throughout the world and what they are going through. I don't know how to rectify this but maybe death helps us to see things more clearly.

I've been listening a lot to the Peter Gabriel song More Than This as I think that it makes sense in terms of life.

Ninguno de nosotros sabe cuánto tiempo estaremos en esta tierra durante esta vida. Pienso que con demasiada frecuencia damos por sentado la vida, posponiéndolas cosas hasta "mañana". Dejamos que las relaciones se deterioren y no le ofrecemos palabras amables a los demás ni les decimos que los apreciamos o los amamos. No estoy seguro de que nos preocupemos lo suficiente por los demás en nuestra comunidad y en todo el mundo por lo que están pasando. No sé cómo rectificar esto, pero tal vez la muerte nos ayude a ver las cosas con más claridad.

He estado escuchando mucho la canción "More Than This" de Peter Gabriel porque creo que tiene sentido en términos de la vida.
