Sadly, both constitutional amendments received a majority of YES votes. Going forward, Wisconsin faces the repercussions of these amendments that will limit voter access and limit the ability of local election officials to hold fair elections.

Planning the Next 100 Years by Steve Betchel As Eau Claire addresses the Century Code zoning update, are we addressing the next one hundred years of coexistence with nature? What is our plan to preserve carbon-sequestering trees? What is our commitment to planting native? With Climate Crisis breathing down our backs, how will we nurture our urban forests? How will we steward our water? What are we doing right now to support beneficial insects? When will we stop dousing our lawns and parks with toxins? When will we start constructing buildings that don’t kill birds? How long will we
(Con't) continue to ignore the impact that free-roaming cats have on wild bird populations? When is it we will recognize the right to clean air and clear water? Why are energy-wasteful leaf blowers still freely spouting carbon and decibels? Why is our downtown a treeless sheet of concrete? What’s a bioswale and why aren’t there more of them? What's a Silva Cell, and why aren't there more of them? How are we building greener and better and smarter? If we aren’t asking these questions, we can’t answer them. And as residents of the Chippewa Valley, we owe Nature answers. Partially reprinted from a ‘It Seems to Me’ column in the Leader Telegram
DID YOU KNOW? Earth Day and Environmental Protection The first Earth Day was celebrated across the nation by 20 million citizens. By the end of that year, the Environmental Protection Agency was established. Since then, many hundreds of laws have been passed to protect and preserve, including the Clean Air Act of 1970 and 1974; Pesticide Control Act of 1972; Ocean Dumping Act of 1972; Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972; Endangered Species Act 1973; Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974; Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976.
‘Environmental Activist’
Senator and Governor Gaylord Nelson (b. 1916, d. 2005) was a progressive Republican AND a Democrat who inspired a national land ethic and legacy environmental legislation in Wisconsin and the nation.
As a Senator, Nelson authored legislation to preserve the Appalachian Trail, and a national hiking trail system. He introduced the first legislation to ban DDT in 1965 and cosponsored the Wilderness Act and the Alaska Lands Act. In Wisconsin, Nelson won protection for the St. Croix Wild and Scenic Riverway and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. But his most significant idea was in 1969 when Nelson proposed a ‘teach-in’ day dedicated to teaching and learning about the environment, believing that if people knew more about the environment, they would demand better protection. His efforts led to the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.
