"From upcoming slackpacks to a boot warming recap of the July expedition to Newfoundland, this newsletter shares many of the exciting opportunities we champion to learn, explore, and give back to the outdoors so cherished. Summer may be ebbing but fall brings an abundance of activities with the annual Trail Challenge and the inspiring Keystone Hiking and Outdoor Weekend. President's Trailhead
"Thank you for your efforts in furthering our mission of providing, preserving, protecting, and promoting recreational hiking trails and hiking opportunities in Pennsylvania. Each of you, through trail maintenance in your club and throughout the state, advocacy on issues affecting our trails, and by just leading hikes, are making a difference at a grassroots level." - Wayne Gross, KTA Board President
The 40th Season of Trail Care has been a transformative success, with ten events completed and seven more to go. We've seen an average of 16 volunteers and 160 hours contributed at each event, showing an increase from last year's numbers. If you're interested in joining us to give back to PA's hiking trails, you can sign up for the remaining Trail Care events HERE. Additionally, we have Tuesday Trail Cares at LeTort Spring Garden Preserve in Carlisle on 8/20 and 9/17, and another A.T. workday on 11/2. In summary, from May to July, we've achieved significant trail maintenance milestones across different regions, from clearing trail sections to building new footbridges and re-routing. Read Jenn Ulmer & Al Germann's full report HERE!
We are requesting nominations for our service awards: the KTA Club of the Year Award, the KTA Citation Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Thyra Sperry Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Certificates of Achievement. Newfoundland KTA International Trip report from Jenn Ulmer
From July 8-18, I had the opportunity to travel with some really awesome people as part of the KTA International Trip to Western Newfoundland! Our exceptional trip leader since 2012, Paul Shaw, coordinated a great trip with awesome hikes and sights to be seen. The hikes were so varied: from a mile to 11 miles, over barren stretches, through forests, up and down scree slopes, down to the Atlantic shore, up to the second highest peak in Newfoundland. There was something for everyone. But, perhaps the best experience was traveling with and getting to know this wonderful bunch of people. To read more about the trip, the hikes, and the crazy ceremony to become an honorary Newfoundlander, check out the trip report on our website HERE. And, much praise and thanks to Paul for leading what he says is his last trip for KTA. The memories and experiences, as well as the fundraising for KTA, were invaluable!

KTA Takes Over Responsibility For Outerbridge Shelter
KTA recently took over the responsibility for the George W. Outerbridge shelter, which is located in the Appalachian Trail section maintained by KTA in northeastern PA, north of Allentown.
The shelter, built in 1965 by the Philadelphia Trail Club and named after Dr. George Outerbridge, was previously maintained by the Allentown Hiking Club. Dr. Outerbridge was the second known thru hiker of the A.T. The Allentown Hiking Club requested to be relieved of this responsibility as Outerbridge is not within the A.T. section they maintain. A metal food box, provided by the National Park Service, was recently added near Outerbridge with the help of volunteers from AHC and the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps. This food box will help keep hiker food secure from bears and other animals, as black bears have been spotted in the area recently. KTA has made other improvements at Outerbridge and plans to evaluate the situation to determine the best future course for the shelter.
