Pearls of Kaplanian Wisdom
Here’s one of the psalms to which we referred in our last newsletter. Many thanks to Dr. Mel Scult for providing it for us!
The 26th Psalm of the Baalshem Mishpat
My foot stands in an even place Though death stalks thru the land And takes alike the rich and poor, the young and old, The ignorant and those that have experienced God. The ignorant, the smug, the scornful pagans, Whose lives lack freedom, sweep, and wholesomeness, Whose aspirations run to victory at any price or cost; Earth-ridden men, who do not let their souls develop Until they penetrate the outer veil of things unto the God within– I have not sat with them. I searched, and lo! the Cosmic Humor ever was before my eyes. For was it not some disposition of the Jah To test the boundaries of what to us seems chance, To experiment with growth in freedom, Which called me from impenetrable tohu-bohu To lighted portals of awareness, Bade me: "Come in!" And as a Host of Grace Unutterable, Urged me to make myself at home on this green earth, To treat it as my very own, Redecorate it, rearrange it to my needs and insights? O! How I love the grandeur and the beauty of my earthly home! How even its catastrophies, its stark afflictions, wrongs, and insufficiencies Fan the embers of my psyche to flames of passionate response! How all my cravings, feelings, doings, mirror my environment! Before me spreads the table of existence: Its meat, its drink, I season to my liking, Nor would I let my hunger, nor my thirst, nor yet my lusts Encroach upon my neighbor's portion. For as a gentleman I would be mindful of the hospitality extended me, Do honor to my Host, So that when time to leave shall come And I must cross the threshold of this ark of conscious lumination Afloat on the mysterious sea of being and becoming, Into the sheer unknown– My foot stands in an even place And I step forth in calm serenity.
