A note from the Director

Right now the largest wildfire in recorded history is burning in New Mexico. Our families and forests are suffering. This climate change driven wildfire has only strengthened our resolve to protect as many communities and forests as we can. The large, new project in the Rio Chama region is a great example of proactive, collaborative work. Starting with some bittersweet leadership changes, we’re building a larger team in the Southwest to respond to the urgent need and increased federal funding.

We’re expanding our work across the country too. We’re hiring a manager in the Northeast to help with projects like the Science & Practice Series.

Momentum continues in the Northwest with the recent virtual Innovative Forestry Summit series. As we feel increasing direct effects of climate change, the Guild is needed more than ever and we’re very appreciative of all your work and support. It is time to renew your Guild membership – thank you in advance for continuing to expand excellent stewardship across the country!

Notes

The Guild is a key player in this Federally supported project. New Mexico is facing unprecedented and devastating wildfires. Our thoughts are with everyone who is impacted. Stay tuned as the Guild highlights activities and results over time in this new project, directly intended to help reduce future wildfires in the region.

Ecotone Landscape Planning, LLC is celebrating its 10th anniversary! Owned and operated by long-time Guild member and current MPC representative Jan-Willem Jansens, Ecotone has been a strong partner since inception, accomplishing much needed work on the ground in New Mexico. Congrats!

The Guild is being featured by Giving Compass!

The University of Vermont is conducting an Eastern U.S. Forest Adaptation and Tree Planting Survey

Forestry for the Birds is active this spring and the Guild is supporting events across the country! Check out details in our events list above about field tours and workshops for stewarding forests with birds in mind in Maine and Oregon this June!

If you have notes to share with our readers, please send them to membership@forestguild.org.

Publications and Research

The Rural Voices For Conservation Coalition partnered with the Forest Stewards Guild and others to produce Pathways to Prescribed Fire: three case studies highlighting opportunities for community-based nonprofits to build cooperative burning capacity. These case studies are meant to support and encourage wider adoption of cooperative burn programs by showcasing the efforts of three nonprofit organizations and the strategies and tools they used.

Our trees provide over $100 billion in environmental benefits but face increasing threats. New research found value of ecosystem services generated by trees totaled $114 billion annually.

Jobs

Check out the Guild's jobs page today and return often for updates. The Guild's Northeast Region office has a Manager position open now. There are so many opportunities posted this month, search them and apply now!
