Welcome to the first edition of the 2023 CGHI: Georgia Bio Legislative Watch, your weekly update on the legislative goings-on at the State Capitol. Each week, we will send you updates on important legislation, committee meetings, special events, and action alerts as needed to keep you informed on the issues directly impacting the life sciences here in Georgia. Our Policy Team will be on the ground to ensure that your voice and your interests are well-represented to continue the growth and impact of our industry in the state.

Last week marked the convening of the 2023 Legislative Session of the Georgia General Assembly. It was a busy week, featuring the swearing-in of Governor Brian Kemp and all of Georgia’s Constitutional officers, new leadership in the House with Speaker Jon Burns and in the Senate with Lt. Governor Burt Jones, and 53 new members of the House and Senate following November’s general election. This is also slated to be the shortest legislative session in recent history, as outlined HERE in Senate Resolution 6, the adjournment resolution which details the legislative calendar and has a current adjournment date of Wednesday, March 29th.

The Senate named their new committee leadership and assignments last week with some notable chairmanship changes being Sen. Larry Walker (R-Perry) now heading the Insurance and Labor Committee and Sen. Matt Brass (R-Newnan) being appointed as the new Rules Chairman. A full list of all Senate committees and assignments can be found HERE. We expect to have the new House committee lists by next week and will keep you updated as we learn more.

Finally, this week is known as Budget Week, where the Appropriations Committees from both the House and Senate convene jointly to hear the budget proposals from Gov. Kemp and all state agencies. A detailed breakdown of their three-day agenda can be found HERE and can also be viewed live by visiting the General Assembly website HERE.
