Chaplains generally work within an institutional setting to offer ready access to support the personal needs of individuals, especially under trying circumstances. Traditionally, chaplaincy has been the domain of religious practitioners, but Humanist Chaplains promote spiritual, emotional health, and ethical decision-making in a manner that is grounded in compassion, secular philosophy, and rational thought. Humanist Chaplains can work for institutions as employees, contractors, or volunteers, but they are not renumerated by clients. They must also be able to provide care and support to all, regardless of faith.

A memorable visit from the Netherlands!

Humanist Canada welcomes Colonel Erwin Kamp

July 31 - Aug 2, 2024 in Ottawa.  Martin Frith, Humanist Canada President

In 2022, thanks to the newly developed chaplaincy program and endorsement of Humanist Canada, Capt Marie-Claire Khadij became the first military humanist chaplain of the Americas. Only three other countries currently have military humanist chaplains: The Netherlands since 1964, Belgium since 1999, and Norway since 2017. (Note that the Australian Navy also has Maritime Spiritual Wellbeing Officers). Marie-Claire established virtual connections with her international counterparts as soon as she became a military humanist chaplain. One was with Major-General Hans DeCeuster, Chief Humanist Chaplain of the Belgium Armed Forces, who visited her and Nic Bruzzone, chair of the HC Chaplain committee in Ottawa in December 2022, to share his expertise. His visit was a great encouragement to Marie-Claire, as it was the first time she had met another military humanist chaplain in person
More recently, on 31 July 2024, Colonel Erwin Kamp, Chief of the Humanist Chaplains of the Dutch Armed Forces, landed in Ottawa. He had organized this trip specifically to pass on the experience and expertise of Dutch humanist chaplains to Marie-Claire and Martin Frith, who is not only the President of Humanist Canada but also sits on the Interfaith Committee on Canadian Military Chaplaincy (ICCMC) as the humanist
representative.  Read the full article

SOCIAL ACTION

HUMANIST INTERNATIONAL  has asked for your attention to this issue:

There is still time to sign our open letter calling for the Indian authorities to protect prominent Indian rationalist and human rights defender, Narendra Nayak. Narendra has campaigned for decades within his community against superstition, exposing so-called ‘God men’ as fraudsters and advocating for the upholding of secularism in a country that has witnessed a sharp rise in Hindu nationalist rhetoric over the last decade.  Narendra has lived under police protection since 2016 owing to persistent threats to his life. As a result of his fearless campaigning and his respected position as the President of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, his name appears on numerous ‘hit lists’ having been identified as a target for assassination.
