Dear Solana Center Supporter,

Spring is arriving in San Diego County. As grunions rush our beaches and the Carlsbad Flower Fields bloom in vivid bursts of color, as gray whales skirt our coast on their migratory path and honeybee colonies search for new places to call home, we honor the privileges and responsibilities we carry as part of the natural world.

Last month, we were honored to receive the national award for Organics Diversion Program of the Year at this year's U.S. Composting Council Conference. We are experiencing growing demand for our services in the field, a larger number of school visits, and increasing public interest in sustainable lifestyle choices, and we need greater support to fulfill all these needs.

If you are able, please consider donating or volunteering with us to support our programming and impact. Read on for more details on what's happening at Solana Center, as well as a celebration of our Volunteer of the Month and advice on conserving water more effectively.

Resourcefully,

Jessica Toth
Executive Director

Join us for an upcoming event!

Solana Center Awarded Organics Diversion Program of the Year by the U.S. Composting Council

Exciting news: our organization was awarded the national honor of Organics Diversion Program of the Year by the U.S. Composting Council!

This national award recognizes Solana Center's contributions to the immediate community and beyond through composting education and environmental program implementation. We are beyond proud to have taught composting operations, from residential, community, and commercial scale as well as waste prevention and resource conservation techniques for the past 40 years. Thank you to all our supporters! Without you, this work would not be possible.

Green Bins Are Coming to San Diego!

Did you know that the City of San Diego is rolling out a new Organic Waste Recycling program? Through this program, every San Diegan will be able to easily recycle organic waste – including food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard trimmings – by putting it in their green bin!

The rollout began in January 2023 and will be implemented gradually throughout the city. Residents with waste hauling services from the City of San Diego will receive ample notification prior to their start date and delivery of the appropriate bins for the collection of their organic waste.

Free informational presentations will be offered periodically as Zoom webinars and in-person workshops for the duration of this rollout. Organic waste recycling for businesses and many multifamily communities are managed by private franchise waste haulers. A green container will be provided by the private waste hauler who services the building. Please visit OrganicWasteRecycleSD.org to learn more about how to recycle organic waste, care for your green bin, attend an educational presentation and receive updates.

How do I know if the City is my waste hauler? Visit the Get it Done webpage or download the app.

Board Member Spotlight: Russell on Preventing Leaks With Flume Smart Home Water Meter

During a recent Green Living Tour, Solana Center board member Russell Levan praised the Flume Smart Home Water Meter, a water monitoring system that allows users to view real-time information on water consumption broken down by fixture and appliance.

While on vacation, Russell checked the Flume app and noticed that something was causing hundreds of gallons of water to be wasted in his toilet at home. Knowing that his household's toilet often wasted water if used incorrectly, Russell called his wife and asked her to jiggle the handle. She did and the intense water usage stopped, saving water for their community and money for their household. What a relief!

The Flume Smart Home Water Meter is available at a $20 discount via the Solana Center website. Click here to learn more!
