Dear Community Members:
We continue to be extremely busy throughout our base in the Coachella Valley and other locations in southern California. As I said in addressing the audience at the first ever City of Burbank Adaptive Sports Fair, this is about "leveling the playing field and creating greater societal inclusion".
Burbank is a real leader amongst municipalities in southern California offering consistent adaptive sports. The City of Riverside as well as, Rancho Cucamonga, Los Angeles, San Diego and many others have also been leveling the playing field! Imagine one day having numerous adaptive sport teams throughout southern California with leagues for many sports. Anything is possible!
Brooke Ellison, a scholar, disability rights and medical research advocate, author, and more died this past week. She helped bring spinal cord injury and disability to the front of the world’s consciousness and raise awareness of and funding for innovative stem cell research.
“I am a fighter. My life has been shaped by challenges and adversity of all different kinds, but it has not been characterized by them. I am not defined by them. For every obstacle I have sought opportunity. In each instance of sorrow, I have sought strength. When there has been challenge and adversity, I have looked for resilience and hope. That is what I want people to know about me, as that is how I see myself. That is also what I want people to know about themselves, as that is how I view the world.” – Brooke Ellison

Oanh "Kim" Vuong was born in Vietnam and since childhood has lived with cerebral palsy, a condition that has made it a challenge to do many things that other people take for granted, from walking on the beach to speaking to a group. She has embarked on a career helping other people with disabilities lead more independent lives. She has worked at the Tichenor Clinic in Long Beach, where she is the co-developer of life skills classes for teenagers with disabilities. She is also a member of the City of Long Beach's Citizens' Advisory Commission on Disabilities (CACoD), where she has advocated for installing beach mats to enable disabled residents to use the city's beaches. Kim is the visionary behind the first Long Beach Adaptive Sports Fair on April 13!
