Hello Kenna,

We’ve always known that Landlovers has the very best volunteers at the Landings and now it has been confirmed. Landlovers was honored by The Landings Association as the 2023 Volunteer Group of the Year. I was humbled to receive this award on behalf of our Board of Directors, our team of Volunteers and our generous Sponsors and Individual donors, without your efforts that would not be possible. Read more about this exciting honor here.

What an honor and recognition for all of our fabulous volunteers. And how appropriate that it comes in the month of March during our March Madness fundraising events: Flea Market Intake, Market day and AuctionMania. These are “community bonding” projects, like barn raising was over a hundred years ago. We had over 700 volunteers pitching in over several days. Many volunteers were working each and every day with high energy, smiling faces, and great teamwork. You and all of our other volunteers across each year are the very best and deserve this recognition.

Our volunteers have outstanding and talented leaders. Our Ways and Means Directors Steve Terrio and Hal Carr continue to do an amazing job leading and supporting our fundraising efforts. Thank you so much to Janie Florenz who stepped in this year and has excelled in leading the Flea Market Executive team of Tom Stephens, Anne Harper, Mike Andrechak, Michele Simari, Pat Dalby, Rib Rubin, and myself. Also, kudos go out to our AuctionMania leaders Eileen Yost and Carolyn Schoenwald Auen and their team members; selecting, photographing, and organizing a bounty of a treasure, and creating yet another very successful evening of fun and fundraising.

Well, I guess it had to happen sometime and this was the year when rain dampened our Flea Market event. The forecast was threatening strong weather and far fewer shoppers ventured out to Messiah Lutheran. Then the heavier rains came earlier and leadership decided to close 90 minutes early. It was far from a major rainout. Early shoppers were particularly enthusiastic. At the end, remaining brave shoppers were rewarded with free merchandise. Our dedicated volunteers scrambled to protect and salvage merchandise for Salvation Army, box things up for next year’s sale, and provided the shoppers with an unexpected benefit. Despite all of that, and thanks to responsive leadership, this Flea Market did pretty well and will make a strong net contribution to our Philanthropic funding. Without exception our shoppers were very willing to make the $5 donation to get into the market. It was not an issue.

Our final fundraiser is our Tour of Homes (TOH) to be conducted on May 4. The TOH team has 10 amazing properties lined up for you to visit. Please see details below and sign up before tickets sell out!

This next month the board will be focusing on our 2024 Philanthropy. Interviews for Scholarships and Community Service Merit awards will soon be completed, and Grant applications are under review now. We need to check our final financials, review the grant requests and select our awards. The board will provide final approval and we will announce the 2024 winners in late April.

Please see below the Slate of Officers and Directors for 2024/2025. Thank you to our nominating committee and to each of these individuals committing to lead Landlovers going forward. The general membership must vote to approve these candidates at our closing celebration on May 21 at Landings Harbor Marina picnic area. We are still looking for someone for Development Director. This critical position maintains the lists of all of the Foundation Donors and Sponsors, actively solicits and communicates with them, and spotlights them in our communications and publications. Please consider volunteering for this vital role on our board.

And finally, our focus Grantee this month is Pinpoint Heritage Museum. Pinpoint plays a vital role in celebrating, highlighting, and preserving the local Gullah Geechee community of Pinpoint. The cultural story of Pinpoint has roots on Ossabaw and Skidaway Island. The Landlovers Foundation provided a grant to create durable display panels replicating the original murals painted on the museum walls thereby helping to preserve the heritage of this unique community.

Flea Market update from Janie Florenz

We were rained out- YUP, RAINED OUT!  I understand this has never happened before in the history of the Flea Market.  But we have met the enemy, and we have persevered.  Want to know how we did?  Let me give you some numbers:

This year’s gross revenue is over $47,000 including intake revenue (bid table) of $8,000 and admission revenue of $8,000.

As you can see, we took in an incredible amount, and we did it with an elapsed sale time of only about 1 1/2 hours.  Additionally the new $5 admission (donation) fee was supported by our shoppers.

I am proud of the volunteers, I'm grateful for your loyalty and hard work, and if I could form you into a (very long) line, I would hug each and every one of you.  You not only survived the rain, the thunder, the wet boxes, the confusion of the shoppers, the rush to save whatever you could, but you did it with good grace and a smile.
