  • Scotian Shores: Will you be our Valentine? During any shoreline clean ups please separate and keep small (12" or less) red, pink and white items that are non-recyclable. Some examples are Tim Hortons cups, Red Solo Cups, trap tags, rope, plastic bottle caps, Coca-Cola labels and other small unidentifiable plastics. • Extinction Rebellion Mi'kma'ki/Nova Scotia: Throughout 2021 and now into 2022 Extinction Rebellion Nova Scotia has been active in actions to protect Nova Scotia forests and their biodiversity. We are currently supporting activists camping out at Last Hope Wildlife Corridor near Middleton for the past 50 days to protest a Department of Natural Resources and Renewables approved cut of a 26 hectare parcel of land which offers rare wildlife connectivity and lies between three important wetlands, Beal’s Meadow, MacEwan Meadow and the Crisp Bog.

Last year there was a similar action involving an almost two month long blockade of two sites scheduled for clear cutting in Digby county. That culminated in West for seeking an injunction in which they claimed over hundreds of thousands in damages and sought to prevent any protests against their practices in South Western Nova Scotia. XRNS was represented pro bono by Ecojustice, Canada’s largest environmental law charity,  and the arrestees by Juniper law and Sarah White.

The court granted the injunction and that resulted in the arrest of nine activists. Though injunctions are notoriously difficult to overturn, the court did limit the scope of the injunction and upheld the right to protest.

  • Sandy Lake Conservation Association:

Halifax Regional Council voted unanimously to support Councilor Blackburn’s motion for an independent, environmentally-based boundary study for Sandy Lake - Sackville River Regional Park.

    Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4yX7ZA-_o4

November 9 2021. The motion starts at 6:16:15 and ends at 6:25:36

The Sandy Lake – Sackville River area was first identified as part of a large, ecologically-connected unit that should be preserved in 1971. Housing is still a threat. However, this study has the possibility to preserve the outstanding biodiversity and conservation value of the area, including 15 species at risk living in 11 habitats. This is a key step in realizing the Park's huge potential to serve the city as one of its most valuable greenspaces in a rapidly growing area. www.sandylake.org

Thank you to all of the city councilors, community groups and individuals who spoke up in favor of this much needed study. Now we await the study’s outcome.
