#BlackMamasMatter In light of the steadily alarming rise of maternal mortality in the U.S., and amidst growing cases of clear neglect in care in hospital systems immediately after labor and delivery, Black Mamas Matter Alliance continues to highlight and center culturally-congruent practices with a focus on Black Midwifery and Black-led Doula care as sound, evidence-based solutions. Most importantly, these are practices and solutions that incorporate the true needs, wants, and desires of Black women and birthing people. Held annually on April 11-17th, Black Maternal Health Week is a week-long campaign to build awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people. The week is intentionally held during National Minority Health Month and brings together dozens of global organizations to rally on April 11th which is also International Day for Maternal Health and Rights. “April 11, the International Day for Maternal Health and Rights, is a day for celebrating the incredible progress made worldwide to improve maternal health and rights worldwide. But it is also a day to call on governments, institutions, and civil society to do more.” You can get involved by attending these virtual events to learn more about action and advocacy by following BMMA on social media and tuning in. A special thank you to Kay Matthews who founded this incredible movement.
