Shana Tova u’metukah ~we all hope you had meaningful and joyous holidays, and now that your fruits have been harvested, we invite you to the latest Kaplanian enterprise. As part of our mission, the Kaplan Center wishes to expand the audience for Kaplan’s wisdom far and wide – and one way to do this is through the introduction of of our YouTube channel. We are so blessed to have an absolute wealth of material to share in three different formats, and we hope you will enjoy them yourselves, and share them with friends so we can have a lovely following!
We are blessed that Rabbi Steven Carr Reuben is reading to us from his book, A Year with Mordecai Kaplan. Following the weekly Torah portion, Rabbi Steven gives us a 'fireside chat' with double layers of commentary and excellent t-shirts.
This summer, I travelled from York, England to New York City and spent three wonderful days in the parks and on the streets, talking to people about what it is like to live in two civilizations. Kaplan was adamant that we recognise this, and I imagine he envisioned both the smooth transitions between them, and the rockier ones – I often wonder what his thinking would be about the current situation. As you know, we all live in two civilizations – or more! I asked people about their family traditions as a way to get to the question of how they manage the juncture between their particular and the culture they are immersed in. It was an amazing experience, and, accompanied by our fabulous videographer and our President Jane, we recorded over 140 people. Everyone had something interesting to say, and I found myself loving them as they spoke of their solutions and hopes for the future.
Our first video comes out on October 12 so follow this linkand subscribe to our YouTube channel!
We welcome you to a new analysis of Kaplan’s work:
