This is your BBA Brief,  a quick look at issues on the horizon for Team BBA.

We'll give a lowdown of issues of importance to you and your business that we're watching this week. Join the discussion or rest easy knowing we're on the case advocating for our members and a vibrant Burlington.

Chittenden County States' Attorney Forum

BBA hosted a candidate forum to learn more about the candidates in this important primary race. Public Safety is a top priority issue for BBA this year. The State’s Attorney is the lead prosecutor for Chittenden County and plays a key role in setting consequences for illegal acts.

Sarah George (i) and Ted Kenney are competing for the democratic nomination which the voters will decide on August 9th as there is no republican candidate. While we work to provide a more in-depth analysis of what we learned at the forum, here are some links to recent coverage:

VT Digger - Sarah George accuses Ted Kenney of making her ‘scapegoat’ for uptick in crime

We partnered with the Vermont Retail & Grocers Assoc., the Lake Champlain Chamber, and the South Burlington Business Association to host this event.

City Budget Passed Unanimously

On June 27, 2022, the City Council unanimously approved Mayor Weinberger’s $96 million City Budget for fiscal year 2023. This budget included a 3 year plan for building a more robust police department, increasing public safety, adjusting property tax rates, and critical public infrastructure.

Emergency Shelter PODs Update

We continue to follow the city’s efforts to create emergency shelters for the chronically homeless. There are two updates.

Elmwood Ave. - this project would place 30 pods at 51 Elmwood within 1 block of Church St.

The Development Review Board approved the project with conditions. The key condition is that the city has to secure a management contract for the site. We are waiting to hear whether the city has been able to fill this key role and will keep you posted.

Change to Land Use Regs -  The Planning Commission (PC)  continues its review of proposed land use regulations that would allow the city to create emergency shelter communities with just administrative (city staffer) approval. The PC has raised some significant concerns. We will continue to follow this process and keep you posted. BBA has submitted written comments and will continue to do so as warranted.

Please reach out with any questions on this critical project.
