This year, we've added a unique twist to our traditional Heritage Fair Pie Baking Contest. As we celebrate our 60th anniversary, we've emphasized the significance of storytelling and preserving our County's history. Our Baking Contest Chairperson, Kathy Betke, suggested incorporating this idea into baking. Therefore, we want to know the story behind your family's cherished baking recipe! Please share the details of your recipe, what makes it unique, and the family member responsible for creating, baking, or enhancing it. It's essential to include a story with your recipe for the contest.
To enter our Family Recipe Baking Contest, complete the online Heritage Fair 2023 Baking Contest registration form, save it to your computer, and email it to kbetke@comcast.net. You can also print and complete entry paperwork and register your baked goods at 9:30 on the event day. Judging will begin at 10:30, and late submissions will not be accepted. For more information, please get in touch with Kathy Betke at kbetke@comcast.net. The historical society may incorporate the submissions into a future cookbook or use them for another purpose. We can't wait to hear your stories!
Shabby Chic Garden Items Needed
We are looking for donations of your beloved "Shabby Chic" garden items needing a new home. Unique garden tools, wrought iron garden décor, watering troughs/cans, shepherd's hooks, wagons, wheelbarrows, and birdhouses are welcome at this year's Garden Glitz. Items must be in saleable condition.
Items will be accepted between July 5-8 at the museum annex garage, 17618 Washington St. in Union. To arrange a time to drop off the items, email Laurie Cisneros at lkcisneros58@gmail.com.
The McHenry County Historical Society is launching the "Hung up on History" campaign to preserve its historic costume and textile collection. The campaign aims to raise funds to purchase archival hangers for the women's costume collection, including wedding, formal, professional, and casual garments from the 1860s-1930s. The currently used wooden hangers will be replaced with archival muslin hangers with cotton padding, preventing stretching and damage to the garments. This will also allow the garments to hang straighter and free up valuable storage space.
The fundraising goal for "Hung up on History" is $1,500, enabling the Historical Society to purchase 250 archival hangers at $6 each. Donors contributing $100 or more will be offered a Behind-the-Scenes collections tour of the Costume and Textile storage rooms with Exhibits Curator Kira Stell on Saturday, August 12, during museum open hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please get in touch with kira@mchenrycountyhistory.org.

The Heritage Quilters of the McHenry County Historical Society have lovingly created a unique quilt to commemorate our 60th anniversary, which will be raffled in 2023. This beautiful 95-inch-square quilt is dedicated to the memory of our esteemed founder, Dorothy McEachren, and has been crafted entirely from donated fabric. The Heritage Star design is a fitting tribute to the rich history it represents. Read more about the quilt and ways to buy tickets. Tickets will also be on sale at Heritage Fair!
To commemorate our 60th anniversary, our featured exhibit, “60 Years, 60 Objects: Stories from McHenry County,” highlights sixty artifacts from the historical society’s collection. As a special feature, from June 2 – businesses throughout McHenry County will host October 2, 2023, ten artifacts from the exhibit, and you can visit them as part of our Artifact Trail!
