CARES Campaign | Program Updates | Holiday Recap | Ways to Support

Dear Onward House Supporters,

As we embrace the final weeks of 2024, I am filled with gratitude and hope for the future we are building together. This year has been a testament to the power of collaboration, compassion, and resilience. With your support, Onward House continues to be a pillar of strength for our community, and as we look ahead to the new year, I want to share some exciting updates and reflections.

One of the most significant milestones in our history is on the horizon: the CARES Campaign Community Center. This groundbreaking project, made possible by our partnership with The Reva and David Logan Foundation, represents a bold step toward health access, equity, and opportunity for all. Together, we are creating a space where families can thrive, laying the foundation for brighter futures.

We are also preparing for the changes and challenges that come with a new administration in Washington and are ready to meet the evolving needs of our community. By collaborating with elected officials, community leaders, and local advocacy groups we are committed to standing strong to ensure continued access to critical resources.

The holiday season has been a joyful and impactful time for our organization. Since Thanksgiving, our staff has been distributing thousands of winter and holiday essentials - including gifts, jackets, winter gear, and holiday turkeys and hams - and we’ll continue these efforts all the way through Christmas Day. These items have reached families in need thanks to the incredible generosity of our partners, corporate supporters, and community groups. These efforts reflect the heart of Onward House—neighbors helping neighbors—and we are endlessly grateful to everyone who made it possible.

Finally, I invite you to consider making a gift to support Onward House families this holiday season. Your donations allow us to continue providing life-changing services and programs for thousands of families in Belmont Cragin and beyond. Whether it's $50 or $500, every contribution makes a difference and brings us closer to our vision of a thriving community for all.

As we close this year and prepare for 2025, I want to thank you for being part of the Onward House family. Your kindness and generosity inspire everything we do, and together, we will continue to create a legacy of hope, strength, and opportunity.

Warmest wishes for a joyful holiday season and a Happy New Year,

Mario F. Garcia

CARES Campaign Community Center: Uniting to Advance Health Equity & Access

In October, Onward House had the opportunity to showcase the CARES Community Center to a room of healthcare and philanthropic leaders at the Michael Reese Health Trust Awards. The event celebrated Stephanie Willding, CEO of CommunityHealth, who used the opportunity to bring together a panel of key partners in the CARES Community Center initiative, highlighting the collaborative effort to bring critical health, education, and support services to Chicago’s Northwest Side. Together, they shared insights into how this new facility will address community needs through holistic, equitable services.mrht_group.jpg

Left to Right: Mauricio Cifuentes (Cicero Family Service), Amy Laboy (Greater Chicago Food Depository), Mario Garcia (Onward House), Michelle Di Benedetto (IWS Family Health), Stephanie Willding (CommunityHealth), and Ameya Pawar (Michael Reese Health Trust)

This collaboration exemplifies the power of partnership and shared vision. With support from Stephanie and our incredible partners, Onward House’s CARES Center will be a model for providing accessible health services and resources to those who need them most. We’re grateful for the leadership and expertise of these community leaders and look forward to continuing our 130-year legacy of supporting children and families on the Northwest Side and beyond.

Meet Our Partners!

The Greater Chicago Food Depository's mission is to end hunger by working in partnership with a network of community-based organizations and individuals. Together, they connect our neighbors with healthy food, lift their voices and advance solutions that address the root causes of hunger – poverty, systemic inequity and structural racism.

Did you know? Onward House proudly holds the distinction of being the Greater Chicago Food Depository's very first nonprofit partner!

CommunityHealth
ch_logo.pngAs the largest volunteer-based free health center in the nation, CommunityHealth provides comprehensive primary and specialty care to uninsured individuals. Their model emphasizes dignity and respect, offering services such as chronic disease management, preventative care, and access to medications—all at no cost to patients. CommunityHealth’s innovative approach ensures that every community member has the chance to live a healthy life.
Recognizing that localized care is equitable care, CommunityHealth established a microsite at Onward House in 2021 to better serve patients on the Northwest Side. We are excited to continue this partnership and expand clinic space in the new building, further improving access to free healthcare.

A trusted name in the field of mental health and family support, Cicero Family Service (CFS) focuses on providing counseling, therapy, and crisis intervention to individuals and families in need. By addressing mental health challenges, they empower people to build resilience and foster meaningful relationships.

CFS collaborates with our Illinois Welcoming Center staff to provide Spanish-language wellness workshops, in addition to individual and group counseling sessions, lead by skilled bilingual therapists. We look forward to the expansion of mental health support the new center will bring, ensuring critical mental health services are accessible to the community.

IWS Family Health

We are excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with IWS to bring vital pediatric care directly to Onward House children and families!

For over a century, Infant Welfare Society (IWS) has been dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children and families. IWS specializes in integrated services such as pediatric health care, dental care, mental health counseling, and early childhood development support. Their commitment to holistic care ensures that every child has the opportunity to thrive, setting the foundation for lifelong health.

Together, these organizations and Onward Neighborhood House are creating a space where the health and well-being of the entire community come first. We can’t wait to share more about this exciting project in the coming months. Thank you for being part of this journey as we continue to build brighter futures—together. Stay tuned for updates on the center’s progress and upcoming opportunities to get involved!

Illinois Welcoming Center: A Haven for the Holidays

Every year, Onward House staff work diligently to ensure every child and family member has the resources they need to have a safe and warm holiday season. New arrivals, many of whom are experiencing their first Chicago winter, turn to the Illinois Welcoming Center (IWC) seeking resources, support, and community. Through holiday celebrations, gift-giving initiatives and access to winter essentials, our team goes the extra mile to spread holiday cheer and continue to provide crucial wrap-around support to new arrivals.

Rosa Chavez, one of thousands who find support through the IWC, initially came to Onward House through our Food Pantry but soon began utilizing multiple programs, including our Illinois Welcoming Center, Adult Education courses, and Early Childhood Programs. Through these programs, Rosa receives healthy food to feed her family, a dedicated case manager to support her, classes to strengthen her computer skills, and a safe educational center where her child can develop while she works. Rosa’s journey reflects how a hub of locally accessible wrap around services like Onward House has a transformative impact on our community members.

Rosa shares:

"Onward House has been a source of joy and hope for my family in so many ways. I still fondly remember the Christmas party they hosted, where my children received gifts. I’ll never forget their beautiful smiles when they opened them. Because of my financial circumstances, I wasn’t able to buy them Christmas gifts. That memory is something we will cherish forever.

Today, as I reflect on my journey, my heart is filled with gratitude. Thank you, Onward House, for empowering me, helping me build a better life for my family, and giving me the tools to keep growing."*

Adult Education Program Celebrates Milestone with First Field Trip

Each year, Onward House supports 650+ students through the Adult Education program. From ESL to Citizenship and Digital Literacy courses, our program is designed to meet learners at every stage of their journey. Each class, whether in person or virtual, supports adult students in gaining essential language, technology, and life skills that empower them to achieve their personal and professional goals. Due to student interest and a fantastic volunteer instructor, we have just opened a new English Conversation Class.

Beyond the classroom, our Adult Ed team provides resources and enrichment opportunities to strengthen community connections and inspire learning.  This year, for example, we introduced small group workshops, where students take part in group tutoring, career mapping sessions, and even vision board making to make their dream careers a reality. In early fall, we launched our first-ever Adult Education Field trip for our students and their families to the Museum of Science and Industry. This hands-on learning experience brought science to life as they explored exhibits on technology, innovation, and the wonders of the natural world. The trip encouraged curiosity and fostered connections among participants, helping them practice language skills in a real-world setting while enjoying one of Chicago’s cultural gems. This opportunity was especially meaningful for many families experiencing a museum visit for the first time, sparking excitement for future field trips and enriching their learning journey.

Holiday Highlights at Onward House

Onward House is dedicated to supporting children and families year-round, but the holiday season offers special opportunities to spread joy and love. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community, whose generosity through volunteering, donations, and gift purchases has made these efforts possible and brought joy to so many families.

  • Holiday Events for Families: We invite families into our space for festive gatherings to fun and interactive activities, where our children can celebrate and make lasting holiday memories with their loved ones.

  • Food and Meal Distributions: Each year, we expand our food pantry services and provide special holiday meal distributions, ensuring that families have access to nutritious food, especially during this time of increased need. This season, we were proud to distribute more than 400 turkeys, 200 hams and holiday food items (with even more distributions on the horizon!) allowing families in our community to gather and share a warm, festive meal together.

  • Gifts for Children: Through various Holiday Giving Initiatives, including Adopt-a-Family and generous contributions from gift sponsors and donors, every child enrolled in our Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, along with their sibling(s), receives a personalized gift. This year, over 400 children will experience the joy of receiving a special gift for the holidays, reminding them that they are valued and cherished by their community.

  • Winter Essentials: We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Reva and David Logan Foundation for their incredible generosity this holiday season! Their donation of 1,400 jackets and 700 pairs of winter boots has provided warmth and comfort to Onward House children and families, ensuring they are prepared for the winter months ahead.

Meet just a few of the incredible supporters who make the holiday season brighter for our community!
