Children Who Witness Domestic Violence
Suffer Long-term Impacts

Domestic Violence impacts millions of individuals and families each year, including many of the youth we support at Shelter Youth & Family Services.

Shelter's recently promoted Clinical Director, Nicole Kawa, explains, “Domestic violence impacts the entire family system. Children who witness abuse are significantly impacted, even if they are not the direct target.
They may experience PTSD, emotional struggles, developmental delays, and even carry forward patterns of abuse into their own relationships later in life.”

Nicole believes therapy can provide a safe and structured path forward and the Clinical Team at Shelter plays a critical role in helping children and families heal from the trauma of domestic violence. “All of our clinicians are trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), helping children and caregivers process trauma, rebuild self-worth, and learn healthy coping skills.” Some staff also bring specialized training in domestic violence treatment for even greater support.

A New Partnership Brings Postpartum Support

A new partnership with Illinois Masonic Hospital called Moving Beyond Depression gives moms in Shelter’s Healthy Families Program access to postpartum depression counseling with a Spanish-bilingual therapist.

Postpartum depression affects many new mothers, yet stigma and barriers to care often prevent them from seeking the help they deserve. Lynn Puckelwartz, Shelter's Healthy Families Director, says, "By connecting families to trusted mental health professionals who understand their language and culture, Shelter is helping moms receive the support they need during one of life’s most transformative times."

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Hope Taking Shape

Big strides are being made at our new home for survivors of human trafficking, the first DCFS-licensed home of its kind in Illinois. Our partners at S.I. Container Builds have officially placed the containers that will form the foundation of this safe, healing space and soon these custom-designed units will be transformed into a warm and secure home where young survivors will receive the safety, care, and dignity they deserve. Hear from CEO Carina H. Santa Maria and follow us on social media to see the progress.

Give a Long-Lasting Treat

Halloween is all about treats, and this year, we’re inviting you to share the sweetness in more ways than one. As you fill your candy bowls for trick-or-treaters, consider matching that spending with a gift that helps children and families facing crisis or recovering from trauma. Your kindness can bring comfort, healing, and hope to those who need it most. That’s a treat that lasts long after the candy is gone!

You Changed Lives in 2025

Because of your generosity in supporting our mission, fiscal year 2025 was a year of bold progress for Shelter Youth & Family Services. Together, we reached more young people than ever before, providing safety, stability, and hope for 661 youth, the most in Shelter’s 50-year history. Watch our recent roundtable with Shelter’s program directors and hear about the achievements they’re most proud of this year. Their passion, like yours, fuels our mission to protect children, strengthen families, and transform communities.
