Two Roads, One Path

Cheryl Klein, M. Div.

Flying Solo Books

Just in time for "Grandparents Day," comes the second book in the auhtor's Second Act Second-Chance Maine Romance series. A decade earlier, Jimmy Jacques and Rosie Meyers were an “item,” but Jimmy hadn’t finished grieving the passing of his wife. Now, the two find each other for a second time at a Classic Car Show where Jimmy is displaying his 1967 Mustang, one of Rosie’s dream cars. As they try to rekindle the sparks they once felt, the couple struggles with the challenges of interfering grown children and his inability (or unwillingness) to set healthy emotional boundaries. He’s ready to retire, but Rosie, more than a decade younger, isn’t. When will it be their turn to start a new life together?

So Important A Question

Timothy Luehrman

Maine Authors Publishing

Gilbert Broome’s parents taught him to own his mistakes. Sir Ernest Rutherford taught him atomic physics. By 1938, he is a professor at Johns Hopkins University and falling in love with a neighbor, Marie Becker. When fission is discovered, he refuses to perform research on atomic weapons until he learns that Germany is already working on a bomb. Reluctantly, he agrees to direct the American effort that will become the Manhattan project and disappears for months. Just as he and Marie begin to repair their relationship, Gilbert is handed another difficult assignment and once again disappears. This time, as he studies the hideous threat of hydrogen fusion, he discovers something beautiful: star math. But will Broome’s math aid the bombmakers? Can he keep it secret? After a hydrogen bomb is tested in the Pacific, Gilbert wonders if the world would be safer without him.

1955: A Jazz Jones & January Queen Raleigh Mystery

Matt Cost

Level Best Books

“Welcome to Antebellum,” the ghoul said. “You are the guest of honor.” Things aren't right in 1955 Raleigh, North Carolina, and Jazz Jones will have to get to the bottom of the murk and clear things up. “You heard about the dead boy?” She had said that her name was January Queen and that she was with the NAACP. “Maybe we came to you,” she said, “because not only are you fair, but you have a firm grasp on what the word justice really means.” And there it was, I thought. I was being asked to bring the killers to justice and expose the underbelly of seething hatred in my city, even if I had to dig some six-foot-deep holes along the way.

Duino Elegies

Rainer Maria Rilke

Translated by Mark S. Burrows

Monkfish Book Publishing Co.

The Duino Elegies stand as the capstone of Rilke’s literary career. They are also among the most demanding of his poems. With this new translation, as Chris Wiman observes, Burrows has “found his way in—has lived and listened his way in—to a new understanding of these beautiful, demanding, transcendent poems.” This is the first English-language translation to draw on the new German critical edition of this collection, restoring many of the poet’s idiosyncratic flourishes that had been “corrected” or ignored in the previous standard version. As Rilke scholar Stephanie Dowrick notes, “We finally have the English rendering of these sublime poems that they have long deserved. Mark S. Burrows is undoubtedly our finest Rilke translator into English. It is more than his bilingual skills—which so many translators lack. It is his deep and authentic understanding of the ‘innerness’ that only a true poet himself can illuminate for all readers.”

Nefertiti's Tomb: Prose Poems for the Restless Seeker

Alicia Cahalane Lewis

Tattered Script Publishing

Journey to the sunken wreckage of the RMS Titanic and Queen Nefertiti's tomb, where catastrophe is woven into a meditation on power, memory, and the loss of divine feminine wisdom. Both lyrical and unflinching, these poems blur the lines between past and present, revealing how history continues to echo tragedy. This collection is a haunting reflection of humanity's pursuit of glory and a call to awaken before another dream sinks beneath the waves. And it's an SOS for American democracy.

Escape to Millinocket

Judi Valentine

Quill Hill

The Year Is 2046. It’s summer’s end in the quiet fishing village of Sea Smoke Cove, Maine. But the quiet is shattered when covert federal agents try to evict residents from their homes and seize properties. Obstinate islanders resist, and frustrated agents mask up, set fires, and violently force residents off the island. Before the take-over, four best friends who are about to start high school plan an escape to a family cabin near Baxter State Park, over one hundred miles away. Wanted, the four flee through the Maine wilderness, pursued at every step by field agents and their drones, fighting to stay alive as witnesses to the atrocities committed. As they run, they worry their parents are dead, in detention centers, or burned in fires they’re accused of setting.

Ground Truth: Writing Towards Justice

Edited by Claire Millikin; Mihku Paul; Karin Spitfire; Maya Williams
Art by Natasha Mayers
Huntress Press

Ground Truth: Writing Towards Justice, co-edited by four poets, Claire Millikin, Mihku Paul, Karin Spitfire, and Maya Williams, presents the work in poetry and prose of some forty Maine authors and activists addressing our contemporary national situation. On the process of creating Ground Truth, coeditor Karin Spitfire notes, “With four great and very busy people, we did it!” Coeditor Maya Williams adds “I appreciated working with three editors who are super intentional about the voices we want to highlight in their truth.” Ground Truth was a labor of love to lift-up voices from diverse backgrounds, because the written word can make a difference at a critical juncture for our nation. Coeditor Mihku Paul grounded the coeditors in the importance of collective discussion and action. Julia Bowsma writes that Ground Truth holds, “the hope that shows up and keeps showing up, which is to say: this is the hope we need.”
