News & Events for Health Empowerment // May 13, 2021
|
In May, our nation honors the rich cultural contributions brought to this country by people of Asian/Pacific Islander descent. With anti-Asian hate crimes becoming more intense in number and violence right in our own backyard, we’re taking a stand through our shared love of food to stop the hate and show appreciation to our Asian brothers and sisters. So many Asian heritage plant-based dishes have become a part of our vernacular, including the versatility of tofu, probiotic benefits of kimchi, a warm bowl of miso, the nutty pad thai, a hearty bowl of pho, and curry with notes of coconut.
In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, next Friday PPMNY will explore the plant-based roots of Korean food culture with Dr. Eui Cheol Lee together with PPMNY Bronx Organizer Vivian Lee and PPMNY public health intern and dietitian Natalie Khoo. Dr. Lee will discuss the plant-based origins of Korean temple food and how the food landscape and eating habits stand now in Korea. Following the discussion, a culinary demonstration will feature the rich ssam, or “food wrapping” culture, for your next plant powered meal.
Korean Temple Cuisine to K-pop: A Changing Food Landscape Friday, May 21, 7:00 - 8:15 PM FREE - register here
If you experience or witness any incidents of anti-Asian hate crimes, please report them online to help Stop AAPI Hate collect wider data and concretize statistics.
