Fossils of Western Washington:
A Marine Perspective

Presented by
Dr. Liz Nesbitt & David B. Williams

Sunday, November 12, 3 p.m.

Fort Worden Chapel

Join co-authors Dr. Liz Nesbitt and David B. Williams as they discuss this amazing array of past life, which is featured in their new book, “Spirit Whales and Sloth Tales: Fossils in Washington State”. They will provide the background on what inspired them to write the first book ever on fossils in the state, why they chose the fossils they did, and some of the new science that has allowed paleontologists to tease out the 500-million-year long story of life in this region. In addition, they will highlight some of the marine organisms, including several unusual whales, a six-foot-tall bird that resembled a penguin, and the state’s oldest fossils, trilobites and archaeocyaths.

To keep this lecture series accessible to all, regardless of the ability to pay, there is no set charge for these lecture events; however, donations are always welcomed and appreciated.

Whale on the Wharf

If you haven't been to downtown Port Townsend this summer, you may not know that PTMSC along with Stefanie Worwag, Mario Rivera, Les Schnick, and Ric Brenden installed a new exhibit on Union Wharf. At 42 feet long, this impressive installation is inspiring hundreds of people every week to learn more about gray whales and their home under the waves. The story behind this exhibit is an amazing example of community collaboration in service of the mission to inspire conservation of the Salish Sea.
