Young Ambassadors - 2024-2025 School Year

We’re so proud to introduce the new slate of Young Ambassadors, a diverse team of students dedicated to environmental stewardship and community service. Together, they will participate in a variety of activities, from organizing community clean-ups and educational workshops to engaging in training and networking opportunities aimed at protecting Pennsylvania’s natural beauty. The program, funded by PA Department of Transportation, will provide an opportunity to build a sense of community within the program but also promote the professional development of the individual students. With their passion and commitment, they are paving the way for a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Pennsylvania. Meet them here.

Alumni News - CJ Chen, Young Ambassador alum and recent Willistown Conservation Trust intern conducted water sampling to assess the water quality of Little Crum Creek that passes through Little Crum Creek Park in Swarthmore Borough, PA and impacts the health of the Delaware River. They conducted the stream assessment as part of an independent study project when they were a senior at Strath Haven High School. Read the 2024 Little Crum Creek Water Quality Report here. They also wrote a blog and recorded their final independent study presentation which they did for an AP Environmental Science Class. CJ is attending Haverford College.

Pick Up Pennsylvania
Supporting the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Pick Up Pennsylvania is an enjoyable way for groups and individuals to participate in clean ups that are happening across the nation and world as part of Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The International Coastal Cleanup engages people around the globe to remove trash from the world’s beaches and waterways. Land cleanups are also necessary to prevent trash from reaching the water in the first place.

The Allegheny River and Watershed Cleanup is celebrating its sweet 16 this year! For over 15 years, family, friends and the community have come together to clean various locations along the Allegheny River near Warren, PA. Each of these cleanups has been proudly registered with Pick Up Pennsylvania.

Susan Stout has participated in the Allegheny River and Watershed cleanup for nine years. Her reasons for coming back year after year are simple: “A beautiful day on the water, searching for surprises as we gather trash, seeing the shoreline cleaner every year, a bald eagle, a great blue heron, the other regular volunteers. It’s a privilege to participate.”

Pick Up Pennsylvania is funded by PA Department of Environmental Protection.

Presque Isle State Park Implements Enhanced
Litter Prevention Strategies

A press event was recently held at Presque Isle State Park highlighting the enhanced litter prevention strategies that are being implemented to combat litter and preserve the natural beauty of its beaches and trails. The park has introduced a series of initiatives aimed at reducing litter and promoting environmental stewardship. With funding from the PA Department of Environmental Protection’s Coastal Resources Management Program, the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful collaborated to implement a pilot program at beaches 6 and 8 at Presque Isle State Park to prevent litter from making its way into Lake Erie waters.

Strategies include informational posters placed on dumpsters, encouraging their use; kiosks housing informational posters and free paper litter bags; picnic tables, stenciled with messages, encouraging proper disposal of trash; and volunteer ambassadors to interact with visitors and educate them on the hazards of litter and resources available to them.
