Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and PA Turnpike Commission Partner on Cigarette Litter Prevention at Service Plazas

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will partner with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to implement the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) at multiple service plazas across the state with a $20,000 grant received from Keep America Beautiful.

Ash receptacles will be installed at the entrance to buildings and other transition points, portable pocket ashtrays will be distributed to adult smokers and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will provide educational messaging about the consequences of cigarette and other tobacco-related litter for displaying at participating service plazas.

According to Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s 2020 Pennsylvania Litter Research Study, over 500 million pieces of litter were found on Pennsylvania’s roadways. Of the total estimated litter, 186.2 million or 37.1% were cigarette butts.

Scranton Tomorrow, in partnership with NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania, held their annual "Scranton City Pride" from May 31 - June 8. To make Downtown Scranton a cleaner and more beautiful district for the city’s residents and visitors to enjoy, schools, groups, organizations and individual volunteers participated in litter pick-ups, sweeping, weeding, planting and a little learning!

City Pride kicked off with the dedication of Christopher A. Doherty Park, turning a contaminated brownfield into a pocket park and community asset. Some 5000 annuals were planted in preparation for the dedication on May 31st. The highlight of the week was Scranton Tomorrow’s “creative container” flower show. A total of 44 new sidewalk planters were placed in two neighborhoods. In addition, two pollinator gardens and one community garden were established. Six educational sessions were offered on houseplants, storm water pollution, native plants and the benefits of bees.

City Pride 2024:

4,188 Participants

2,190 Volunteer Hours

57 Projects

11,000 Flowers Planted

16,000 K -pods Recycled

3,000 Pounds of Trash Collected and Properly Disposed

"City Pride just by the numbers was very successful, but the count really doesn’t show the real impact. We strive to find a place for everyone, no matter where they are in life.  People matter and what they do matters."
Steve Ward, Scranton Tomorrow's Project Manager of Safe, Clean, Green & Design Programs and Affiliate Coordinator.

Land and Water Stewards

On June 8, 10 volunteers collected cans, bottles, bags and food wrappers from the West Newton to Sutersville section of the Youghiogheny River through the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Waterway Stewards program.

Being stewards of our roads, trails, waterways and other shared public spaces benefits the whole community. Clean and beautiful communities are more inviting to visitors, reduce costs associated with maintenance and tend to see less illegal behavior, making it a better place for all residents and providing a foundation for community and economic development. To be a steward of a road, area or waterway that you care about, join one of our programs today!

Land Stewards – Our adoption program is available statewide for municipal roads, parks, neighborhood blocks, greenways and trails. We provide a sign recognizing the volunteers’ efforts.

Waterway Stewards Program – Register to be a waterway steward and collect litter and stream health data while cleaning your favorite waterway. You choose where you want to clean and it can be a different waterway each time. This is the perfect program for anyone who uses the water for recreation like anglers, boaters and birders to become involved in community science and to build long term stewardship of our water trails.

Thank You for Picking Up Pennsylvania

The biggest impact can be made by the smallest group, family, individual or whole communities. If you participated in Pick Up Pennsylvania this spring by picking up litter, planting trees or flowers, painting a park bench or sharing an antilittering message, we extend a heartfelt thank you! Please take a moment to report results of your spring event if you haven't already. Report your results here

Community improvements, large or small, send a powerful message that we care about where we live, work and play. And there is no better feeling than seeing the physical transformation. It is sure to motivate others to join in.

The Rozzi family cleaned up Hahn Road in Peters Township, Washington County, collecting 15 bags of trash, 336 plastic bottles and 27 tires.

Eleven members of the Mifflin County Democratic Committee collected ten bags of trash from Ort Valley Road (adopted through the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Land Steward program in 2018).

It's not too early to plan your fall cleanup. Pick Up Pennsylvania, supporting the International Cleanup will be held from September 1 through November 30. Supplies of bags, gloves and vests are available, as supplies last. Learn more.
