Dear Pam:
I awoke with a start last week to realize that it was nearly August. Is it just us or has 2021 passed doubly quickly and triply busy?
Yours in the Outdoors,
Marci

TRAINING
Thanks to everyone who attended either a Leave No Trace session or one of the officers gatherings last month. We will have certificates and a LNT resource card for those who attended those sessions shortly (post office willing).
We are working on arranging a customer service session and would remind everyone that American Red Cross first aid training is available online at a discount if you choose to sign up. In-person training is still off the table with ARC.
The 50% off coupon we had in June has long since expired but a 20% coupon (GETCERT0421) will bring the cost of the online course down to $28. Recall that this is a legitimate use of chapter money and PPFF will split the cost with you so an investment of $14/person (and some time) will give you at least some first aid/CPR basics.

DO
A copy of the new Penn's Parks for All strategic plan for the Bureau of State Parks will be sent to you shortly (or you can download it online). If you are a friends group associated with a park, do take some time to flip through it as it might inspire ideas for new projects.
It's a visionary plan, one that takes into account the changing needs of Pennsylvanians as we and the system itself age. It acknowledges the need to dedicate more funding to caring for the parks, to making accessible places close to where people are and want to be, and to find more ways to work with local communities (and on the ground volunteers like you). Your input in the listening sessions conducted what seems like another lifetime ago definitely played a part in the final language. Thank you, as ever, for your dedication. |
KNOW
DCNR is working on a Walk With a Doc project this September, building on the idea that a daily walk in the outdoors is just as good for your health as any pill or medicine. Do you have a relationship with a doctor who might be willing to lead a walk for you/with you? This will be a great way to publicize your group!
[As of this writing walks are already scheduled by park staff at:
Gifford Pinchot State Park, Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, Little Buffalo State Park, Prince Gallitzin State Park, Ridley Creek State Park/White Clay Creek Preserve.] |

This article from the June 2021 issue of Men's Health posits an interesting challenge - the 20/5/3 ratio of time in the outdoors for health and well-being.
- 20 minutes a day, three times a week just being outside
- 5 hours a month in a more forested space
- 3 days a year off-the-grid, camping and unplugged
How are you doing with this ratio? Could make a good question for your readers and members! |
