2024 WGEP Highlights

  • Record Numbers Achieved: Thanks to your generosity, we reached 11,238 women, girls, and boys across rural Senegal and Kenya this year. From school scholarships and adult literacy classes to community programs providing alternatives to FGM/C and leadership training, we are committed to creating pathways for progress and advancement. 🏆

  • 20th Anniversary Ndajee Celebration: On May 31st, we celebrated two decades of WGEP’s transformative work at the beautiful Bridgeport Art Center with a record-breaking 250 attendees and raised over $250,000 towards our mission. The evening honored Catherine Cappel and Lily Messih with the 2024 WGEP Impact and Champion Awards. We also hosted a thought-provoking Live Podcast led by Jerome McDonnell in conversation with Dorcas Kinyua, Julie Moller, and Khady Ndong. During the discussion, Dorcas expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am hopeful that the exposure I have received from WGEP will open more opportunities for me to be able to change the lives of many more girls in Kenya and the world.” Thank you to everyone who joined us to mark this amazing moment, and we hope to see you again at next year's Ndajee! 🎊

  • New Library Opens: On October 8th, the WGEP Library and Computer Center in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya, opened up to the community with more than 10,000 books 📚 and equipped with 25 computers 🖥! This new space is already a vibrant hub for learning, literacy, and community engagement. Since its opening, the library has welcomed over 2000 visitors reading books and using the computers. We’re deeply grateful for your support in helping us reach this major accomplishment, and we’re excited to see the impact of the library continue to grow in 2025!

  • Inspiring Back-to-School Events:

On October 10th, we hosted our first-ever Back to School at LOULOU event. Guests enjoyed a delectable four-course dinner with wine pairings prepared by 2024 James Beard Award-Winning Chef Jason Hammel. The night's highlight was a moving talk from Casimir Coly, WGEP’s Senegal Program Coordinator, who shared stories of the challenges girls face in accessing education and the transformative power of giving them a voice.

On October 11th, we celebrated International Day of the Girl with an engaging and memorable Book Club 📖 event at Semicolon Bookstore. WGEP Goodwill Ambassador and New York Times Bestselling Author Abi Daré joined us virtually from London to discuss her new book, And So I Roar. The evening was filled with meaningful discussions, storytelling, and a shared dedication to empowering girls through education. A heartfelt thank you to Abi, Semicolon, and all who attended for making it such a special night!

  • Keeping Girls Safe During FGM/C Season in Kenya: In November and December, WGEP partnered with HOPE for Girls @ Visa (HFGV) and the Tharaka Women’s Welfare Program (TWWP) to protect girls from female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) through Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) programming and scholarships. Our partners provided safe havens for 845 girls at risk, offering secure accommodations, nutritious meals, and life-changing education on reproductive health, human rights, and empowerment. Program graduates are now more likely to reject FGM/C, remain in school, and become advocates for ending FGM/C in their communities! We thank you again for responding to our urgent appeal to protect girls from FGM this season. Your generosity and commitment have made a huge impact, and we are incredibly grateful for your support. 💜
