Education Committee

Are you interested in participating on the Friends of Valle de Oro's Education Committee?  We need folks who would like to help the refuge staff keep the education programs active at Valle de Oro.  Duties of this committee include:
  1. Managing the Opening Doors to Nature Scholarship program
  2. Assisting with refuge education events like Mountain View Field Day.
  3. Soon, developing some simple education programs to provide to school groups coming to the refuge
  4. Develop training on these programs for Friends volunteers.

Friends of Valle de Oro Nature Scholarship Program

Do you know a college student who is studying an environment-related field? Encourage them to apply for the Opening Doors to Nature Scholarship. The deadline to apply is August 1.

  • Nature Tots Children ages 3-6 with an adult are invited to explore nature with a refuge volunteer! 

Thursday, August 7, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon EVENT CANCELLED

  • Community Update Open House Come learn about all that is happening to transform Valle de Oro at this open house event. Free food will be provided by the Friends of Valle de Oro. 

Friday, August 8, 10:00 am - 11:30 am

  • Nature Kids Children ages 7-10 with an adult are invited to explore nature with a refuge volunteer! 

Friday, August 15, 8:00 am - 9:30 am

  • Summer Morning Interpretive Plant Walk Join Ranger Dakota for a slow walk around the visitor center grounds to learn about the magic of our local desert flora.

Friday, August 22, 9:30 am - 11:30 am

  • Plant Appreciation Workshop Come learn about and connect with native plants through observation and art with Ranger Dakota. Register by sending an email to: dakota_dominguez@fws.gov

Saturday, August 23, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon 

  • Backyard Habitat Chat & Certification Party Learn about building a backyard refuge in a space of any size! Join our partners for talks, walks, demonstrations, activities for kids, and take home free seeds and plants!

Friday, August 29, 8:00 - 10:00 am

  • Weed Warriors Morning Work Party Spend the morning helping us manage invasive plant growth at the visitor center. RSVP by emailing Ranger Dakota at: dakota_dominguez@fws.gov

Thursday, September 4, 11, 18 and 25, 10:00 - 11:30 am

  • EcoExplorers Join us for a free, four-week ecology class for ages 8–11 at 10 a.m. Thursdays, Sept. 4–25. Explore Valle de Oro’s wetlands, grasslands, and bosque through hands-on activities, walks, stories, and videos. Students will learn how these habitats support wildlife and why protecting them matters. Space is limited to 10 students. Registration required. Please email jennyparsons@gmail.com
