Hike Nova Scotia and 25 host organizations offer the 2024 Winter Guided Hike & Walk Series from January to March across NS. There are 55 hike, walk or snowshoe events led by local folks and participants qualify to win trail prizes. They are free or low-cost events and some require pre-registration. Hike NS thanks its partners on the ground for organizing the events as well as Goose Lane Editions, Mountain Equipment Company and the NS Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage for their support. The series is linked to the Take the Roof Off Winter initiative.
Hike NS will offer the Field Leader – Winter Leadership Module on February 24 in Halifax. Participants receive Outdoor Council of Canada national certification.

Scotian Shores is committed to cleaning Nova Scotia's shorelines, creating awareness of the plastic pollution crisis, and connecting us all so we can make a bigger difference. "The federal government is currently in the pivotal second phase of updating the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy in alignment with the UN Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Strategy. The government is requesting comments on their milestone document, published in December 2023, by February 9th.
The federal milestone document serves as the foundation for Canada's progress thus far. The Caucus is calling on the environmental community to contribute your perspectives, as your voice is crucial for our upcoming submission to the federal government.
Join us as we collectively work towards protecting, conserving, and restoring biodiversity!

N.S. will expand rating system for aquaculture sites to include shellfish operations
The expansion to include shellfish — and eventually marine plants like rockweed and kelp — was announced by the province's Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture on Thursday at an aquaculture industry conference in Halifax.
"I hope it'll give the picture that there's science to support where aquaculture sites go and where they're not appropriate," Kent Smith told CBC News after the announcement.
Sperm whales live in clans similar to early humans, Dalhousie study says
Sperm whales live in structured clans similar to early humans, according to new research.
Hal Whitehead, the sole author of the study and a professor at Dalhousie University, said the clan systems are matrilineal and average roughly 20,000 females per clan.
The discovery will help understand the marine mammals' cultural system and non-vocal behaviour, he said.
Halifax stops testing ice thickness as winters get warmer
The Halifax Regional Municipality has stopped testing frozen lakes and ponds to determine if the ice is thick enough for skating, citing climate change as a primary reason behind the decision to stop the program.
Invasive crayfish could become a problem in Yarmouth County
A potentially invasive crayfish has been found in a Yarmouth-area pond. Sarah Kingsbury, a senior aquatic invasive species biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, says it could be a marbled crayfish — a species that can essentially clone itself and take over ecosystems.
The year 2023 was one of the warmest on record for the Maritimes
The World Meteorological Organization uses six leading international data sets from around the world to track global temperatures. That data reveals that in 2023 a new temperature average of 1.45 degrees above the pre-industrial era of 1850-1900.
The past nine years have also been the warmest on record for the planet.
Here in the Maritimes, 2023 will not be soon forgotten as a year of extreme weather ranging from wildfires to floods.

The Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq: Climate Change Adaptation Coordinator
Reporting to the Director of the Department of Aquatic Resources & Fisheries Management you as the Climate Change Adaptation Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of Nova Scotia’s water sector’s 2023 Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and enhancing their readiness for climate change.
This position is based out of the CMM’s office in Millbrook, NS where you will work under the guidance of the Program Manager in the Department of Aquatic Resources & Fisheries Management. You will also work with and be supported by adaptation specialists at the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC), who will be supporting the implementation of this and other sector strategies across Nova Scotia.
Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society: Web Developer/Designer
In this role on the National Communications team, the National Web Developer will work closely with the National Communications team, the National Conservation Team, and with CPAWS chapters across the country, to develop, maintain and improve the organization’s web platforms, and will play a crucial role in the front- and back-end development of our websites, advocacy and fundraising tools, and other digital platforms.
