WHY DOESN’T MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBE PLANTS?

Those of us who have overcome serious health issues with whole food, plant-based nutrition have a common refrain: If only I had learned about this years ago. If only my doctor had told me that food would make such a difference.

As caring and knowledgeable as our medical providers are, their nutrition training is still inadequate. Medical school education is slow to recognize the power of eating whole plant foods and other critical lifestyle behaviors, while pharmaceutical education dominates.

Things are changing. For example, New York State now offers a plant-based nutrition resource library for physicians that includes Plant Powered Metro New York as a resource! Successes like these arise as a result of the decades-long determination of medical champions like Michael Klaper, MD.

Over 50 years as a primary care physician, Dr. Klaper has honed the practice of prescribing plants for all kinds of ailments. Today, Dr. Klaper is crossing the country teaching medical students and his healthcare colleagues what he always wished he had been taught in his training.

In November, Dr. Klaper will make stops to teach at 5 of our local schools and hospitals: Columbia University, SUNY Downstate Medical School, Einstein College of Medicine, NYU School of Medicine, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens.

He’s also here for you! No matter where you are on your plant-based journey, join us when we team up with Marble Collegiate Church in NoMad to present a free community talk with Dr. Klaper: Food as Medicine: Transforming Health with Plant-Based Nutrition, on Saturday, November 9, at 4:00 PM.

That’s not all: Join PPMNY and Dr. Klaper afterwards for a nourishing meal at Candle
, with proceeds benefiting Plant Powered Metro New York and Dr. Klaper’s nonprofit organization Moving Medicine Forward.
