Jo,

This year, your $100.00 donation made it possible for us to do our work to protect and restore the river and to inspire students with science. Thank you.

Your contribution in 2022  buoys our efforts to restore habitat and develop the next generation of river stewards.

Everyone who makes a donation to the Estuary Partnership by December 31 will be entered to win a set of three bottles of Willamette Valley wines*21 and older or a $50 gift certificate to Timberline Lodge!

Sacajawea Elementary School features Estuary Partnership environmental education classroom lessons and field trip in a video

This three-minute video is guaranteed to be one of the highlights of your day: Salmon Creek Tree Planting Field Trip.

Students at Sacajawea Elementary School produced an outstanding video, documenting classroom lessons and a field trip facilitated by Environmental Educators with the Estuary Partnership. The video was created for their school’s daily news program, Skyhawk News.

The Estuary Partnership thanks both the Washington Department of Ecology for supporting this work and Mr. Lee’s fifth graders for welcoming Environmental Educators into the classroom, being great learners, and producing this video.

Are you planning to check out the king tides?

Raymond Park flooded during king tide

King tide season has arrived and the Estuary Partnership and Washington Sea Grant are asking people in Washington's Pacific and Wahkiakum Counties to share photo taken during these high tide events. It is helpful to take pictures where the impact of the tide can be gauged against familiar landmarks that do not move with the tides like buildings, roads, sea walls, and beach infrastructure such as boat ramps, piers, and pilings.

Photos can be posted on the MyCoast phone app or the MyCoast.org/WA website. We will use the crowdsourced king tide photos to visualize sea level rise impacts, informing infrastructure projects and research in flooding, and erosion.

December king tides are on the 23, 24, 25. January king tides are on the 21, 22, 23. View Washington Sea Grant's King Tide tide table for exact times

Help protect western painted turtles at the Sandy River Delta

western painted turtle

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife considers the western painted turtle to be a Sensitive-Critical species – meaning that there are significant challenges impacting the turtles’ abundance, distribution, diversity, and/or habitat. Habitat loss and degradation, increased nest predation, and the introduction of invasive competitor species such as red-eared sliders are the primary drivers of the western painted turtles’ decline.

When you visit the Sandy River Delta, keep an eye out for the western painted turtle and report any sightings to sandyrivertuttles@gmail.com. By reporting your turtle sightings, researchers can better understand the habits and prevalence of the turtles in this area.

Steigerwald Reconnection Project StoryMap released

Steigerwald StoryMap

Our new StoryMap shares behind-the-scenes photos and videos of how a former dairy farm at the gateway to the Columbia River Gorge was almost lost to industrial development, and how a $32 million project restored the floodplain and transformed the refuge into a beacon of hope for habitat restoration and flood risk reduction.

To enjoy the StoryMap to the fullest, we recommend pouring yourself a cup of hot coffee or tea, pulling it up on your computer (a phone will work but a bigger screen aids in navigation), and following along through the history of the land, details of the project, and peek into the future of Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
