HBL and BMW of Honolulu are hosting a readiness night for the Honolulu Century Ride and Aloha Fun Ride. Come join us at 5:30pm on September 5th for drinks, delicious eats, bike checks from The Bike Shop, and an interactive Q&A session. Let's sip, snack, and spin our way to a wheelie good time!
It’s officially September! Which means the Honolulu Century Ride and Aloha Fun Ride are less than 4 weeks away (Sunday, 9/29). Now is the time to sign up if you haven’t already OR encourage a friend to support HBL and come out to ride! For your friends and family that don’t ride, we’ll have live entertainment and food vendors at Kapi‘olani Park so there is something for everyone.
Putting on the largest cycling event in Hawaiʻi is no small job! We are still recruiting volunteers for the 2024 Honolulu Century Ride.
Available shifts are listed here and include event preparatory tasks from Thursday 9/26 to Saturday 9/28, as well as numerous support roles on ride day, Sunday 9/28. There are even rider-friendly shifts available Sunday for early birds who can assist with set up!
Shift descriptions are available here, but please feel free to reach out to volunteer coordinator Vincent Levy if you have any questions about volunteering at this event! Special options exist for volunteer groups, too.
Hawai‘i Bicycling League is seeking Board of Director nominations. Are you, or is someone who know, passionate about cycling in Hawai‘i, and wants to help HBL achieve its mission? HBL is excited to roll out a brand new workshop series, E-Bikes 101, starting this September where attendees will learn all about electric bicycles & get a chance to test ride different types of e-bikes.
E-bikes are helping breakdown the most common barriers to bicycling and giving more people access to the awesome world of bicycling. “It’s too far for me to bike there.” “There’s a steep hill.” “I don’t wanna get to work all sweaty.” E-bikes leave these reasons NOT to ride in the past so now people can pedal forward with power & less effort!
Curious to see what all the buzz is about? Come out to a free E-Bikes 101 Workshop brought to you by Hawai‘i Bicycling League and get the chance to test ride an e-bike for yourself (and much more!).
Upcoming free classes in Mānoa, Kalihi, Kailua, and ‘Ewa.
Thanks to the Engineers Advisory Council of the Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association, HBL’s BikeEd Hawai‘i has a new fleet of 60 bikes and helmets. These bikes visit over 100 elementary schools and teach nearly 8,000 fourth graders bike safety each year! Plus, HBL donated our old fleet of 60 bikes to KVIBE, and other community partners.
Five months after a double-fatality crash killed Naomi Meyer and James Rowland as they were crossing Fort Weaver Road inside a marked crosswalk, Honolulu Prosecutors have charged Jonah Moya with two counts of negligent homicide. HBL has been closely following this case since it occurred on March 24th. HBL is working to coordinate additional meetings in the coming weeks to stand in solidarity with Chelsea Meyer (daughter of Naomi) and elevate a call for Complete Streets, Vision Zero and everyone’s responsibility to be aware of vulnerable road users.
On August 29, 2024, Council Members Tyler Dos Santos-Tam and Augie Tulba introduced model e-bike legislation. It will provide needed clarity and classification for low-speed electric bicycles. Bill 52 passed its first reading by the full Council on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. Additionally, the Council will consider a resolution urging the Hawai‘i Legislature to update statewide traffic code. HBL supports these measures to help modernize and clarify e-bike definitions.
On August 7, 2024, Honolulu City Council passed Bill 44 introduced by Council Members Tyler Dos Santos-Tam and Esther Kia‘aina passed first hearing by the full Council with 9 ayes. The bill is now tentatively scheduled to be considered by the Transportation Committee on September 24, 2024.
