| Here is a taste of the concert on March 7th. Many thanks to David Trochimowicz and First City Credit Union for creating this video. |
|
One of our largest ever audiences enjoyed a fabulous concert on March 7th to celebrate Women's Month. Our all female ensemble played a selection of pieces by women composers and LA composer Anna Drubich presented her string quartet, Rain@5, in person. We very much enjoyed performing at the Manoukian Cultural Center for the first time and it was a beautiful and entertaining evening. |

Suzanne York - our journalist in residence! |
You may have noticed that we are getting more press coverage for our concerts and much of that is down to the work of local journalist and Melodia Mariposa volunteer, Suzanne York. Suzanne has interviewed musicians from our last three concerts and written articles for the local Pasadena press.
We hope you enjoy her writing and we thank her for her support in getting the word out to more people in our community. |

LA Opera new Concertmaster |
|
We are so proud to share that Melodia Mariposa alumna, Alyssa Park, has been appointed Concertmaster of LA Opera!
Alyssa is also a member of the Lyris Quartet who will be performing again for us on May 23rd (see below). The Lyris Quartet also performed at Westminster Presbyterian for our Fundraiser concert just weeks after the Eaton Fire. in 2025. Alyssa is one of our most committed performers, appearing in our Holiday concert and Peter and the Wolf last year!
We offer our warm congratulations on her new role - a well-deserved achievement! |
“After many years on the concert stage, I am deeply honored to begin this new chapter as Concertmaster of LA Opera. Opera’s power lies in its ability to transform music and drama into living storytelling, revealing the depth and complexity of the human experience and strengthening the cultural fabric of the community.I look forward to collaborating closely with Maestro James Conlon and Maestro Domingo Hindoyan, and with my colleagues in the orchestra, to shape performances that are vibrant, collaborative, and rooted in musical integrity. To serve Los Angeles- a city that has been central to my artistic life- in this role is an extraordinary privilege.” Alyssa Park |
Just to reiterate that the musicians who play for Melodia Mariposa are the best in town, take a look at some of our alumni who performed at the Oscars last month! |
The Lyris Quartet - from the Altadena Strong Fundraiser and Through Darkness, Light and Shadow. |
Giovanna Moraga-Clayton - from Women in Music |
Kyle Gilner - from the Zelter Quartet - Death and the Maiden |
And our very own videographer and patron, Robert Smith! |
Through Darkness, Light and Shadow
Our next concert will be on Saturday May 23rd at 7pm. We are delighted to be joined again by the amazing Lyris Quartet for a concert featuring a fascinating mix of composers, old and new.
This vibrant program features composers spanning several centuries including Altadena’s own Savannah Jo Lack - with a piece written after the Eaton Fire - alongside Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Caroline Shaw. Works by Benjamin Britten and Beethoven round out the program. Blending fresh contemporary voices with timeless masterworks, the evening provides a journey of moods—somber, playful, and ultimately profound—drawing the listener from reflection to intensity.
The concert will be held is the Neighborhood Unitarian Church on Orange Grove, Pasadena and as it is smaller than our other venues, tickets will be more limited than usual.
Tickets will be available on May 10th - mark your calendar! |
