ACTION ALERT: Tell CARB to Demand Stronger Landfill Protections NOW!

Contact the CARB Board before Thursday and demand stronger landfill rules and more transparency.

Dear Joe,

A large mound of garbage fills the bottom portion of the frame, overlaid with the text

On November 20th, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will vote on new standards for landfills—a crucial opportunity to protect our communities and climate by updating a 15 year-old rule.

We need your voice to demand that CARB strengthen these proposed regulations. While they are a step in the right direction, they simply do not go far enough to safeguard the health of California's most vulnerable populations and our atmosphere.

Mismanaged landfills are a recipe for disaster. They pollute our environment, damage our health, and generate excessive levels of methane, a powerful short-lived climate pollutant. We've seen the dangers firsthand, like the years of under-regulation and cutting corners that sparked the fire at Chiquita Canyon Landfill.

🛑 The Health Cost of Weak Rules

When emissions go undetected, nearby residents—especially young children—are among the first and most severely affected.

  • A young girl with her hair in pigtails and wearing a white t-shirt holds a cardboard sign above her head that reads
Methane and toxic co-pollutants released from landfills can worsen asthma, harm developing lungs, and degrade local air quality.
  • Over 1.6 million children under the age of five in California live near a municipal solid waste landfill.

Protecting these communities is non-negotiable. It requires a monitoring and capture system that identifies and mitigates every leak and ensures swift corrective action.

📢 What We Must Demand from CARB

The question is: Who will regulators protect—the Landfill Industry or the Community?

We must pressure the CARB Board to vote for stronger protections and greater transparency by insisting on these three critical points:

  1. Full Transparency of Landfill Data: Give the public and regulators complete access to emissions and monitoring data.
  2. Stronger Fire Prevention Thresholds: CARB must strengthen the fire prevention temperature thresholds now, before another landfill ends up on fire.
  3. Comprehensive Monitoring: Mandate the use of all available monitoring methods—including satellites and drones—to enhance community protections and ensure emissions are identified and captured.

🎯Hold Our Government Accountable

Recently named co-chair of the subnational climate coalition America Is All In, Governor Gavin Newsom said:

Decades of progress to protect public health is on the line as the Trump Administration works to roll back critical environmental protections. California isn’t having it. Thanks to our state investment, we’re using satellite technology to detect methane leaks as they happen. With this new data, we’ll be able to move faster to cut harmful methane pollution – protecting Californians and the clean air we’ve fought so hard for.

To truly live up to this promise of protecting public health and using cutting-edge technology to detect and quickly mitigate pollution, the new CARB rules must be strengthened to mandate full transparency and require the use of all monitoring methods.
