Dear Scott and Annie,
The future is taking shape at Virginia MOCA!As you know, we will soon move to a new home—a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our museum. Our new building on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU) will be a vibrant gathering place where people can experience contemporary art in deeper, more meaningful ways—encouraging connections and creativity among a broader community.
Our deepest appreciation goes to Jane Batten, Joan Brock, and Susan and David Goode for gifting $25 million in funding to VWU for the construction of the building. These esteemed individuals have long been supporters of Virginia MOCA and VWU, and we are incredibly grateful for the crucial role their contributions play in advancing the mission and success of both institutions.
We are now in the early stages of a campaign to fund additional capital needs in the new building, to expand exhibitions and education programming, and to sustain the future of the Museum.
This bulletin is the first in a series of updates to you about our progress, and I invite you to join us on this exciting journey. If you have questions or want to talk more about this project, please reach out. I’d love to connect with you as our new home becomes a reality.
Thank you for your continued support of Virginia MOCA. You are an instrumental partner in shaping the future of the Museum as a space that inspires, educates, and unites.
Virginia MOCA signs a 50-year lease with VWU, cementing the partnership between the two organizations.

Constructing the Vision
Fair weather in Hampton Roads through most of the fall and early winter benefited the construction schedule. The concrete foundation is installed, the entry road has been cut in, and the concrete walls are going up on the museum building.
Funding the Future
To fulfill our vision of becoming an even more vibrant and accessible cultural asset for the region, Virginia MOCA is embarking on “Shaping the Future”, a $10 million fundraising effort to support our relocation, enhance our community impact, and ensure our long-term sustainability for generations to come.
Capital Needs – $5 million Supporting the move into and activation of the new museum building, ensuring that we meet the stringent standards for accreditation set by the American Alliance of Museums
Exhibition and Education Support – $2.5 million In support of our dynamic exhibitions program, featuring artists of international and national renown and honoring regional talent, and of our public and studio programming, Summer Art Camp, school tours, and professional development for educators
Sustainability – $2.5 million To ensure operational excellence, expand audience reach, improve internal processes for our move to the new facility and support recruitment and retention of the high-caliber talent and artistic energy that defines Virginia MOCA
Special Thanks
The foundation of support on which to build our future has been provided by the Virginia MOCA Board of Trustees, Virginia Wesleyan University, and our generous donors. We are grateful to Bruce Berlin, Susan Cohen, Scott Duncan, Matt Galumbeck, and Nicole Naidyhorski, who have been integral to the launch of our Campaign Cabinet.
