ForestHer NC: Making Forestry Stronger, Together

Women have always been a part of forestry. Historically, women often helped guide family decisions about when to cut, which trees to save, and how best to steward their land for the next generation. Historical accounts from the Southern Appalachians describe women’s roles in decisions about timber harvesting and prioritizing long-term forest health.

Growing the Forest Workforce: Building Local Capacity in Appalachia

The Guild has partnered with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in the heart of Central Appalachia in Southwest Virginia to co-pilot the new Forest Stewards Apprenticeship (FSA) Program in response to this challenge. FSA in Southwest Virginia (FSA-SWVA) creates full-time, apprenticeships for local residents to gain in-depth, hands-on forest conservation experience and professional training.

Fire Suppression Biases Fires To Be More Extreme Decades of fire suppression have increased fuel loads and fire severity, leading to the “fire suppression paradox”—by suppressing fires, we potentially make fires harder to put out in the future. However, in this paper, the authors show a separate impact of fire suppression that may cause even greater increases in average fire severity than fuel accumulation. Biochar Report The Forest Stewards Guild and Croatan Institute have released a new report: Landowner Participation in Carbon Dioxide Removal Credit Markets via Biochar. The report is designed to help landowners and supporters navigate the rapidly changing world of biochar and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) markets. Read more.

Snowpack Decline Kindles More Severe Fire In The West "Low-snow winters with early snowmelt may prime forested watersheds to dry, burn, and experience high severity fire" and this year is extremely low snow!
