🌍 Happy International Day of the Girl!
This Saturday, October 11, we join the global community in celebrating the power and potential of girls everywhere. At Women’s Global, we are especially proud to highlight the voices of our incredible scholars—like Aicha, a young leader from Senegal, paving the way for climate solutions in her community.
"My name is Aicha, and I am an 11th-grade student in Karang, Senegal. I am a change agent in the Our Sisters Lead program, from the village of Missirah, a fishing center in Senegal.
Through leadership training on environmental management, I learned how harmful plastic waste is to our mangroves, which are critical for absorbing carbon and protecting against global warming.
Inspired, I mobilized my community in our local language to stop throwing garbage into the sea. Together, we organized cleanups, created a waste collection system, and began protecting our environment. Now, people in my village are changing their habits and congratulating my parents for my leadership.
I want to continue this work and pursue a future in environmental management. I am so grateful to Women’s Global and its donors for believing in us, daughters of the land.”
Celebrate International Day of the Girl—Support Local
Bookstores and WGEP!
This fall, WGEP is teaming up with local bookstores across Chicago to celebrate International Day of the Girl on Saturday, October 11. Stop by participating bookstores to discover inspiring, girl-centered reads and fall favorites. Each shop is offering special ways to support WGEP’s Back-to-School Campaign—so while you stock up on your fall reads, you’ll also be helping girls just like Aicha have the opportunity to lead change in their communities and start the school year strong.
We’re in the final stretch of our Back-to-School Campaign! Just $10,000 stands between 2,000 girls and the chance to return to school and thrive. Join us now and help us reach our $50,000 goal!
Celebrating 1 Year of the Our Sisters Read Library!
One year ago, on October 8, 2024, we opened the doors to the Our Sisters Read Library in Tharaka-Nithi, Kenya—the first and only public library in the entire county. 🎉
Since then, the Our Sisters Read Library has become a vibrant hub for learning and connection:
10,000+ books are sparking curiosity and fostering a love of reading for children and adults alike
25 computers are helping students, teachers, and parents build digital literacy skills and access online resources
Dedicated librarians and an IT specialist are guiding visitors, offering training, and ensuring everyone feels welcome and supported
Community outreach led by our partner TWWP is raising awareness about library services, connecting with schools, and helping more families benefit.
The ICT Center is bridging the digital divide by offering daily computer access, digital training, and research support, equipping learners of all ages with the skills they need to thrive in today’s world
In just one year, the library has truly become a cornerstone for literacy, technology, and opportunity in Tharaka-Nithi. However, the past year has not been without challenges. When USAID funding was unexpectedly terminated earlier this year, the library's future felt uncertain. But thanks to the resilience of our community and the generosity of supporters like you, we’ve managed to keep the library’s doors open. Students are still reading, families are still gathering, and the community has greater access to books and digital resources than ever before.
Students of varying grade levels are reading and studying in the Our Sisters Read Library
As we celebrate this milestone, the work doesn’t end. WGEP is still facing a significant funding gap to keep our library operating. Your gift today will ensure the library continues to thrive in year two and beyond—nurturing a love of reading, expanding access to technology, and opening doors for the next generation.
Together, we can write the next chapter of opportunity and learning in Tharaka-Nithi. Here’s to many more years of stories, learning, and resilience at the Our Sisters Read Library.
💜 Thank you for helping us make this dream a lasting reality!
