January 2024, Newsletter
Welcome to 2025!
We are all anxious about the future with so much turmoil and change in the world. When it all gets seemingly overwhelming and even frightening, I fall back on my fundamental belief: human experience is just an opportunity for us to understand our meaning and get closer to the essence of what we are: goodness.
We should take every opportunity to advance our spirits in that effort, even in small, daily tasks. Ask yourself what I am learning from this experience and how can I use it to better contribute to our collective wellness, success, and prosperity.
Meeting and sharing with others, especially those we may not readily identify with, is an inherent part of this.
To all our members, thank you for continuing to support us! For those who are not yet members, we’d love for you to become one! Being a member means supporting our work to build global ties and having opportunities to meet our visitors, host a meal in your home, attend their meetings, or travel along on the bus to chat and share! “I'm a huge proponent of exchanges, student exchanges, cultural exchanges, and professional exchanges. We talk a lot about public diplomacy, we must get our message out, but it's also the case that we should not have a monologue with other people. It has to be a conversation, and you can't do that without exchanges and openness.”
-- Condoleezza Rice, 66th United States secretary of state from 2005 to 2009

Climate Change and Methane
The participants came to Albuquerque, New Mexico, from November 27 to December 3, 2024.
The program, organized by Meridian International Center in partnership with local Global Ties U.S. members, focused on exploring innovative approaches to reducing methane emissions in the oil and gas industry.
During the visit, participants observed advanced technologies and engineering solutions for efficient and environmentally responsible oil and gas extraction. The program highlighted collaborative efforts between public and private entities to promote sustainable practices within the industry. The delegation also engaged with various stakeholders to study state and local methane emissions regulations. These interactions provided insights into regulatory implementation, compliance measures, and strategies to ensure accountability in the industry.

The Program: America’s Cold Warrior Paul Nitze and National Security from Roosevelt to Reagan
In America’s Cold War, James Graham Wilson traces Paul Nitze’s career path in national security after World War II, a time when many of his mentors and peers returned to civilian life. Serving in eight presidential administrations, Nitze commanded White House attention even when he was out of government, especially with his withering criticism of Jimmy Carter during Carter’s presidency. While Nitze is perhaps best known for leading the formulation of NSC-68, which Harry Truman signed in 1950, Wilson contends that Nitze’s most significant contribution to American peace and security came in the painstaking work done in the 1980s to negotiate successful treaties with the Soviets to reduce nuclear weapons while simultaneously deflecting skeptics surrounding Ronald Reagan.
