James Beard Award-winner Chris Smith and Tessa L. Desmond discuss okra as a model crop for a new, more resilient approach to agriculture in a changing climate. NOFA NJ and Lima Family Farm are collaborating on another fun-filled farm-to-table event with musical performances by The Cold Soil Drifters from 4-6pm followed by Tony and the Trees from 6-8pm.
Entry is FREE but local food and beverages will be available for purchase. Enjoy farm tours, pasture walks, community engagement stations, art activities sponsored by Scrap U, AND the opportunity to meet some of the collaborating vendors that sell products through the Lima Family Farm market! 6/13 - Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm Tour
Join NOFA NJ for a 2-part workshop as we tour Sweet Amalia Oyster Farm and visit the Cape Shore Laboratory in Cape May, NJ. Guests are welcome to join NOFA NJ Board and Staff after the tour for a local meal.
Our tour will begin on the banks of the southern Delaware Estuary in an area known locally as the Cape Shore Flats. We’ll walk offshore during low tide to tour the farm where oysters are grown using rack and bag cultivation methods. Of course, you’ll get to taste some of the freshest and most delicious oysters you’ve ever had! Visitors should plan on walking a distance of 500 feet and be prepared to trek through ankle- to knee-deep water. Snugly fitting closed-toed shoes that can get wet or hip boots are recommended.
The tour will then proceed to Cape Shore Laboratory, where attendees will tour the lab, learn about the shellfish breeding program, and engage with Rutgers staff. MORE INFO
