Backyard Bog Garden—Jimmy Lindsey
Photo above: Here is another CPC member’s creative approach to incorporating natives in the landscape.

Even if you have a small yard, it is still possible to have an interesting native plant feature in that yard!  With the tray of an old, worn out wheelbarrow, I created the perfect soil environment for a small (very small) pitcher plant bog. Our home air conditioning unit provides an excellent, low maintenance, continuous supply of water that has sustained this bog for almost a decade. Pitcher plants (Sarracenia alata, native to Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas), yellow hatpins (Syngonanthus flavidulus), pine lily (Lilium catesbaei) and a few ferns, including ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron) and southern shield fern (Christella normalis), have brought an interesting look to this otherwise uninspiring little area!

Save the Date: Fall Meeting, Nov. 4, 2023
The Coastal Plain Chapter annual meeting is set for Nov. 4 at Altama Plantation Wildlife Management Area, near Brunswick. We have confirmed that Dr. Jaap De Roode will speak. Dr. De Roode teaches biology at Emory University, where his research focuses on evolution of parasites and their hosts, particularly those affecting monarchs and their protozoan parasites. DNR Wildlife Biologist Eamonn Leonard will speak about the habitat restoration project at Altama Plantation WMA and will lead us on a short field trip to see the site and the greenhouse operation in the afternoon.
