Heartfelt Farewells and a Warm Welcome
Wings has always been a strong volunteer-run organization with a Board of Directors committed to actively serving in our programs. Each Board member occupies a role that plays to her individual strengths, and when those talents are combined, the Board as a whole exhibits exceptional leadership with outstanding results.
The terms of two of our Board members are coming to an end this month and we want to take a moment to recognize how these remarkable women have helped us grow into the organization we are today.
Natalie Travia was the Chairperson of the Workshop Committee when it changed course from holding public workshops to serving specific referral partners. Natalie also performed a lot of behind-the-scenes work, such as organizing board files and handling our electronic communications. During a time of great growth and change, Natalie's gifts were exactly what we needed.
Kathy Quay was the Human Resources Representative on the Board and worked directly with our Executive Director as a guide for evaluating and growing our staff. She started at Wings as a personal stylist, then became the co-chair of our fall fundraiser and is now the driver of our Wings and Wheels event! Kathy's innovative approach to fundraising has helped us reach a place we didn't think was possible several years ago.
As these leaders step off, we are excited to welcome a new Board member, Iris Melendez. Raised by a single mother in the metro-Philadelphia area, Iris feels a deeply personal connection to the mission of Wings. She is acutely aware of the challenges many women (particularly women of color) face finding employment, and the huge impact that a small helping hand can make. Iris is thrilled to be able to pay it forward and support the communities that have helped her along the way.
Finally, we bid a heartfelt goodbye to Laura Szilier, our Communications Specialist, who will be leaving Wings at the end of June to teach preschool at The Bucket School in West Chester. Laura started at Wings in December 2016, initially helping maintain our supporter and client databases, donor acknowledgements and year-end reporting. Her role soon expanded to include managing our fundraising event registration and silent auction, providing social media analytics, and maintaining our website. Laura was always willing to go beyond her responsibilities to ensure Wings continues to serve women with excellence. We wouldn't be where we are today in terms of our website, events, and social media without Laura's time and talent. We wish Laura all the best in her new position and we will certainly miss her!
