This edition features information on the wreath workshops andupdates from the Pacific Horticulture College, Community Education, Youth Programs, & More, plus The Bookend. We hope you enjoy it!
A wreath hanging on the door is a symbol of welcome. I really enjoy the scents, textures, and of course, the one-of-a-kind creations when you make a wreath by hand. I will have handmade wreaths available starting the 28th of November.
My group of volunteers and I will be busy creating the ever-popular holiday wreaths!
Come in and browse our selection or contact me directly if you have any questions or want to place an order.
They will be individually priced, starting at $65.
Our volunteers will sort and chop the materials into bins to have available for classes. We go through a lot of materials!
I am including a list of our favourite materials. If you are cutting back any of the corresponding plants or if you have any greens that would be great in a wreath, please save them for us. We need lots of variety and big enough pieces to wire into a wreath. We will be accepting materials until December 5th. All can be dropped off at gate 4, by our polyhouses, at your convenience. We very much appreciate your help.
Thanks! Linda headgardener@hcp.ca
Many of you may not realize that we have a Wreath Garden located in the lower field, across from the Doris Page Winter Garden.
We planted it in 2019 to grow plants suitable to harvest for our community ed wreath workshops. We started harvesting 2 years ago. Some of our favorites are Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Aureomarginata' and Thujopsis dolabrata 'Variegata'.
The Wreath Garden This garden was planted in 2019 on the site of the previous Ornamental Grass Garden. This location had both drainage and weed challenges. Common Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) rhizomes had spread throughout the entire site. This is one of the most widespread garden weeds in the world and we have tried to eradicate it by solarization. Raised planter beds made from Western red Cedar locally milled in Sooke have provide a sunny, well-drained area.

Practical Permaculture for Home Landscapes, Your Community, and the Whole Earth by Jessi Bloom & Dave Boehnlein.
A repeat review from back in October 2020, as this is a popular topic and an outstanding book. In this thorough book, the authors cover the basic principles, processes, systems and more of permaculture with the intention of making it ‘approachable and inspirational.’
They describe permaculture as a process that starts with a problem, then finds an elegant solution; living sustainably within ecological means; and using wholistic design decisions based on ethics and natural systems. The entire design process is explained, with detailed information on the plants, water, waste, energy, shelter, food, animals and structures that make up the garden. This thoughtful book can be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to be more deliberate in each step of their gardening practice.
Available from the library to borrow and the Gift Shop to buy.
