Dear Community Members:
You can still make reservations for our Sunday fundraising dinner at Copley’s, see below! Besides enjoying delicious food from our Friends at Copley's you can also bid on a number of very cool silent auction items! We’d love to see you and have you join in building community, leveling the playing field, and creating greater societal inclusion. Check out this interview from Eye on the Desert about our fundraiser.
Bringing consistent adaptive sports to the City of Riverside has been part of the plan for the past two years. The openness shown by City staff to making this happen is admirable. It's taken a lot of patience and persistence but it is now happening and shows what the power of collaboration can do in leveling the playing field.
We will also be starting up the 23/24 edition of our school-based program, Sports for everyBODY, with CVUSD.
We will be sailing, sold out, once again with Christian and California Inclusive Sailing in Newport Beach on October 7, preceded by an adaptive workout at Cross-Fit Shorebreak in Huntington Beach. (There are still openings for the workout.) We also will be learning how to row with Community Rowing of San Diego at the end of the month. (Please note that the November 5th fishing and community fair at Aziz Farms is at capacity, but you can sign up for the waiting list. We are still seeking vendors.)
You will also find us at a number of friend's events, as we love to collaborate.
As I continue on my life journey, I more fully understand that impermanence is the reality of life. Nothing lasts forever. One year ago in Phoenix at the National Parks and Recreation Association conference, I coordinated a session with two colleagues titled, “Sports for EveryBODY, Successful Collaborations”. The main point for me was that although challenging, collaborations are key to creating greater societal inclusion.
At SoCal Adaptive Sports we’ve been very fortunate and blessed in developing multiple partnerships with a number of municipalities and organizations. These can be seen in the variety of programs that we offer with our friends. Although we might provide the impetus, we always do our best to collaborate and teach in order for activities to be sustainable. These take on many different forms, but overall have enabled many more opportunities for people with disabilities and their families.
Unfortunately, some partnerships end. As with any relationship all parties are responsible for growth or termination. I'm very introspective and look at my role in all of this, working on developing a greater understanding as to what I might have done differently. But sometimes things just don't work out for whatever reasons.
In light of this, Monday will be the last day that we are involved with coaching the beloved DRAGONS, a program that we have put a lot of time into developing and nurturing. I've seen every member of the DRAGONS grow not only in their basketball abilities to play as a team but also in the deeper relationships that they've built with one another.
The development of the DRAGONS, individually and as a team is somewhat similar to what occurred in the movie Champions. (I still like the original Campeones better.)
All of the DRAGONS are champions, no matter if they win a game or not. I know that many of the DRAGONS will participate in the SoCal Adaptive Sports and Friends collaborations and that we will one day participate in Special Olympics, competing against other teams!
This past week was another fun-filled one starting with our partnership with Desert ARC and the Hi-Desert Boys and Girls Club in Yucca Valley. (Be on the lookout for more future programming with the City of Yucca Valley.)
We are also offering 1:1 and small group coaching and workouts. If you'd like to do this please have SoCal Adaptive Sports assigned by your Inland Regional Center Community Services Coordinator.
We always look forward to ending our week with the athletes at Desert ARC-Palm Desert! They are all learning quickly how to play disc golf, pickleball, boccia, and basketball!
As the local coordinator for Special Olympics, we really want to build this program starting with tennis and pickleball, see below. (Another partner is ACEing Autism.) You can sign up now to be a Special Olympics athlete or volunteer in the Coachella Valley! Please consider joining in on the fun!
On December 16 we are going to see theFirebirds, see below, for the second time. If we sell 100 tickets we get to take a post-game photo on the ice! Tickets are $24 each.
Meet the Board of Directors
Rosell Sexon Matienzo
Rosell has been in the healthcare field for more than 20 years. She currently manages a Multi-Specialty clinic located in La Quinta, California with a total of 12 providers. Rosell had advocated for all her patients, which started when she first worked in a boarding home for neglected people. Working there made her think of the resident’s individual needs and become their voice and advocate for better care. She suggested to the owner doing monthly mall visits, which was the start of a new beginning for the four residents.
Please consider making a donation and becoming a sustaining, monthly, or annual donor! We appreciate every donation!
