The Purr-fect Mews

May 2025

National Volunteer Week

We are very fortunate to have amazing volunteers who contribute to the care of the cats/kittens that come to Sun Cities 4 Paws. They help with cleaning, socializing, working on the phones, helping at the Thrift store and more.  Over 14,000 hours of volunteer time was contributed in 2024. We thank our volunteers and are so grateful for their compassion and dedication, as we could not do it without them!.

Cat-ucation: Why do cats eat plants?

  • Out of curiosity. Nothing like investigating an enticing scent
  • They like the taste & texture
  • They are soothing an upset stomach
  • They are bored or stressed

Please watch for these plants that are poisonous to cats: chrysanthemum, daffodils, lilies, poinsettia, mistletoe, aloe, and asparagus fern, just to name a few. If your cat starts exhibiting signs of difficulty breathing, vomiting, excessive water consumption or urination, drooling or difficulty swallowing, call the vet immediately.

Rocky & Candy

What began as a heartbreaking situation turned into a story of hope and home. Rocky and Candy, bonded semi-feral siblings, spent nearly two years in cages because their owner couldn’t afford to have them sterilized. Deeply loved, their owner cared for them daily—until illness made it impossible. She reached out to Sun Cities 4 Paws, and in July 2023, Rocky and Candy arrived at our Youngtown location.
They were placed in a large enclosure to begin the long process of socialization. Staff and volunteers worked patiently, but Rocky especially struggled with trust. After six months, they were moved to a free-roam room in Peoria, where Candy gradually warmed up to people. Rocky remained shy, often staying in corners, but over time began to relax.
After 14 months, the two could be found lounging together in the sun, watching the world from the window. On February 6, 2025—nearly 17 months after arriving—someone heard their story and knew they were the right match. Rocky and Candy finally found their forever home.

**UPDATE Rocky & Candy are settling into their new home  - they roam freely and are very curious and intrigued about everything. They are still not keen on being social with their new dad, but that's ok -  they are happy and loved and given enough time, we feel they will definitely become more social.
