This is your BBA Brief, a quick look at issues on the horizon for Team BBA.
We'll give a lowdown of issues of importance to you and your business that we're watching this week. Join the discussion or rest easy knowing we're on the case advocating for our members and a vibrant Burlington.
Vote Tonight: Main St Redesign and Parking Loss
The city council will vote tonight on the Great Streets Main Street concept design; specifically the reduction in curb-to-curb width to 40 feet, from an existing varying width of 50-70 feet. This means that the council will be voting tonight on changes to the street that will allow for the loss of ~67 parking spaces.
We know parking loss is an issue of top concern to our members regarding this project. We also know many have not been made aware that the decision on parking removal would happen so soon. Construction is set to start Fall 2023.
Speak Up:
We encourage members to share their thoughts at Public Forum, time certain: 7:30 pm in person at City Hall or via Zoom (Zoom sign up here) You can submit a comment in writing to publicforum@burlingtonvt.gov.
The city has committed to administering a parking study and implementing strategies for mitigating parking loss. The BBA will be closely following these initiatives.
Proponents of multi-modal streets and the subsequent parking loss are quick to point out the numerous examples of economic benefit they can create. However, these economic benefits are substantially less in communities that lack appropriate housing density to support them. Our community must get serious about allowing for more types of housing to be built in the blocks around Main St.
