Florida Brotherhood Summit Hosted by Church of the Holy Spirit, Apopka
Directly Speaking
By Brotherhood Executive Director Tom Welch, MDiv.
First, let's begin with the welcome letter we received from the Bishop of the host diocese for the state-wide Florida Brotherhood Summit ...
When we receive such remarks as this from a bishop, it is something to share with others throughout the church. Particularly for our 600+ Members-at-Large, this may help emphasize the value at the parish level to what we are about.
Of the 6,000 miles I have traveled so far this month, most of it was "tending the Brotherhood vineyard," whether forging new relationships or nourishing existing ones.
The workshop/summit in Florida was the first workshop/summit I've been to where we had three high school seniors in attendance. Our gracious host, Church of the Holy Spirit/Apopka hosted we had registrations with two "prospect" parishes (St. James/Leesburg & Christ the King Anglian/Ocala) with men attending the Summit as well as brothers from Resurrection/Longwood, St. George's/The Villages, St. John's Cathedral/Jacksonville, and Church of the Messiah/Winter Garden, and St. Benedict's /Plantation.
A big thanks to the brothers (and sisters) at Holy Spirit/Apopka and BStA Board Representative, Fr. Ed Bartle, for all the work in getting things together for this event. Sr. VP/Admin. Jeff Butcher and I were so grateful for the efforts. We had a special guest, Fr. Matt Marino from the Diocese of Florida/Trinity Parish in St. Augustine, share the latest on the Mentor Network he birthed several years ago when in Houston, Texas, as an Associate Priest at St. John the Divine. We will feature that in a future edition.
National President Roy Benavides has appointed Brother John E. Curtis, Holy Trinity by the Lake, Rockwell, Texas, as the new Awards & Decorations Commission Chair effective June 1, 2026.“Reconstituting this commission is long overdue,” President Benavides stated. Further Br. Roy shared, “We have been witnessing strong dedication to our Mission of bringing men and youth to Christ. It is time for us to recognize individual and chapter level service in a more appropriate manner.”
Br. Curtis and this commission will be using a two-pronged process to promote it and recruit four to six members from geographical areas building a representative body. The target date for announcing the various awards would be November 30, 2026. The awards and recognitions will center around exceptional levels of service, activity and engagement among our various ministries. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding these special recognitions, the criteria, applications, etc., later during the summer.
Bishop Hector Monterosso (center foreground) joined the 20th Texas Assembly Golf Tournament on May 12 at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas.
TEXAS ASSEMBLY GOLF TOURNAMENT RECAP
The Texas Assembly of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew comprises 31 chapters covering approximately 45 percent of the state’s population. Beyond the service work undertaken by our chapters, the Assembly actively supports initiatives aimed at combating homelessness, providing assistance to veterans, enhancing the lives of at-risk youth, and offering scholarships to graduating high school seniors.
To fund these endeavors, the Assembly organizes an annual charity golf tournament, which this year marks its 20th edition. Held on May 12 at the Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas, the event attracted sixty golfers and received support from over forty sponsors. Consequently, the tournament successfully raised over $16,000, which will be utilized to support the Assembly's charitable donations. The Assembly expresses deepest gratitude to the golfers and sponsors for their unwavering commitment and consistent support.

St. Luke's, San Antonio Collects Fans
Project Cool is an annual program run by the city of San Antonio, Texas to provide 20-inch box fans to seniors suffering from the area's high heat and humidly. For the second year the St. Luke's, San Antonio Brotherhood chapter organized the effort for the parish. The men collected 41 fans and then took them to surrounding fire stations, where they would be collected by the city and distributed.
Additionally, the National Service Center has begun assembling a complete list of chapters' Zoom and Hybrid meetings specifically targeted for a MAL's benefit. Listed below are chapter meetings available to engage in fellowship.
THE BROTHERHOOD OF ST. ANDREW HAS BEEN PART OF THE MEN’S STUDY SERIES KNOWN AS PROJECT 12 FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
Please consider the series as a potential opportunity for your chapter or group of men to study and interact on one of the topics in the Lifeline Series.
“It started on a patio. Two men sat there talking about what God was doing in their lives and ministries. Diverse in more than just age and geography, these two men discussed how building men was not a cookie cutter, one-size-fits-all approach There was a desire expressed to gather a group of effective men’s leaders from all over the country to share what God was doing. This was the beginning of the A-Team.
Fast forward to 2014, and over 25 men gathered in the Midwest at a retreat center to learn from each other and celebrate how God was working in their lives to change their communities. One of the outcomes of these conversations was to gather a list of great faithful resources to point men towards to help, teach, and grow.
The Project Twelve concept emerged. Twelve guys following Jesus. Twelve months in a year. Perhaps this group could help men follow Jesus year-round like the original twelve guys did. Welcome to Project Twelve.”
The programs can be found at www.projecttwelve.net. They are called Lifelines. They were just recently released. They are faith-based roadmaps for every generation. According to the outline, each of the six segments has six blocks. If you did one per week, it would last at least 36 weeks. Each is based on the Serendipity Bible.
We are part of the original group that established Project Twelve five years ago. There are seven different denominations/ministries, and 13 individuals who contributed to the writings. There is no charge for tapping into the various programs.
