Networking Event Recap

We had a great turnout for our social/networking event on January 23rd at WillowTree. It was great to see some new faces and we had a great time just catching up, sharing career goals, and career advice. Charlottesville is lucky to have such a great community of women who are interested in tech whether just getting started in tech or well-established in the tech industry!

Employer Hosts Needed!

UVA, CMU, and Penn State are leading the NSF- funded project ExLENT: Preparing Autistic Students for the AI Workforce, and we are seeking employers to host summer internship opportunities for 30 community college students participating in the program.

This is a unique, NSF-funded AI internship opportunity to host a talented community college student for 8–12 weeks at no cost to the host organization. Interns will be available starting June 23, 2025, and can work remotely (preferred) or in person, depending on the host company's needs.

Each student completes a 10-week AI course taught by graduate students from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Virginia, focusing on developing applications that leverage large language models (LLMs) for tasks such as code generation, essay writing, classification, Q&A, and conversational AI. Additionally, an ExLENT-provided support coach will meet regularly with each intern (and optionally their managers) to facilitate organization, self-leadership, and professional development.

More information about the program and employer expectations can be found here.

February's reading suggestion:

Inspire: The universal path for leading yourself and others. | Adam Galinsky

Inspire provides evidence for the elements of great leadership.  Specifically, Galinsky outlines the three factors that he’s defined after years of studies that constitute leadership that inspires instead of infuriates.  Those three characteristics are having and communicating vision, being able to exemplify or consistently act on values, and being great mentors to others.  Adam goes further in his book to put how using these attributes adequately will help you make better decisions, win negotiations, promote fairness and diversity, and of course, inspire others.  Galinsky’s writing style is quite and easy to absorb, it’s a fast read with many entertaining stories and examples that you will quickly zip through the book.  If you want another view on leadership and looking for something to Inspire you, this is the one.
