May 27, 2025, Albuquerque, NM. The New Mexico Business Coalition (NMBC) today released scores for legislators’ performance during the 2025 legislative session.
Legislators were provided with NMBC’s priorities at the beginning of the session, which are based on issues that will enable New Mexico’s business environment to thrive, prosper, and create jobs. They cover points including taxes, regulatory burden, public safety, and the education of our future workforce, among others. NMBC policy and priority positions can be viewed HERE and the Legislative Scorecards can be viewed HERE.
During this legislative session, we saw an increase in bills introduced that would be harmful to New Mexico businesses, attempting to impose or create new tax burdens, interfere with employment relations, and harm the oil and gas industry, which provides 40 percent of the state’s budget. The scores reflect votes for or against this type of legislation and are further weighted for sponsorship.
Many of the anti-business bills died during the legislative session. “We applaud the effort of those legislators who set party politics aside to do what is right for the people of New Mexico,” said Carla Sonntag, president and CEO. “We’re thankful that at a time of unprecedented attacks against New Mexico values, much of that was stopped by those who put New Mexicans ahead of partisan priorities.”
Referring to HB 11, formerly called the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act, Sonntag said, “It's a sad day in New Mexico when a legislative body would be so irresponsible as to pass a tax on employees and employers and is known to have huge insolvency issues. New Mexicans should not be taxed on a program that will fail financially.”
Albuquerque, the state’s largest city, is now among the most dangerous cities in the nation. NMBC has prioritized fixing the failed bail reform system and stricter criminal laws to assure the safety of our citizens. The governor has stated that she will call a special session to work on crime, but that has failed before, and there was only a hyper-partisan attempt during the legislative session to make New Mexicans safer.
Sonntag said, “I hope those legislators who place greater importance on criminals’ rights than the safety of New Mexicans will understand that law-abiding citizens are the priority and must be protected.”
