Have you ever thought of a new year as a new book? It would be a book with a blank cover and without a preface. Yet, it would be a sequel, where we know all or many of the characters and are intimately familiar with the main character, their strengths and weaknesses, their past and their most recent highs and lows. Would we want to read this sequel?

What would we hope for in this new sequel? Which storylines would we want to continue, and which would we rather come to an end? Would we hope for plot twists or would we prefer little variation from the previous books? Would we welcome new characters, new places, new storylines, or would we dread change from the familiar, the comfortable, the known? Would we cheer the main character on with encouragement, or would we chastise the main character for going too fast, too far, or in the wrong direction?

Would we read this new book to the end? And if we did, would we be satisfied with the ending? Would we like the opportunities taken, the choices made, the new experiences, the new characters added? Or would we dislike the new additions? Would we feel regret for  the main character's mistakes made or missed opportunities?

While we are not truly in control of what lies ahead for us in the new year, we do have influence over our choices on what and who we bring in to our stories, how we bring them in, and what and who we reject or omit. We may or may not have 12 chapters or 365 chances ahead, but I believe with whatever we have ahead, we do have countless opportunities to add hope and love to our stories and to the stories of others. This year, may we take the opportunities presented to us, to be good characters in other people's stories. And may we be satisifed with how the book ends.
