The Energy for Generations (EFG) programwrapped up its year-long initiative to empower older adults to take action on climate change by adopting clean energy solutions and becoming peer educators within their communities. Led by MassEnergizein partnership with the City of Newburyport, the program supports residents through peer-to-peer outreach, community events, and one-on-one coaching focused on energy efficiency, heat pumps, and solar.
What was the impact of this initiative?
21 community engagement events were hosted throughout 2025, reaching 300+ residents across Newburyport.
A fall mailer sponsored by National Grid and co-signed by the Mayor of Newburyport significantly expanded the program’s reach, generating 217 leads for home energy assessments and weatherization programs and connecting residents directly to Mass Save partners and trusted vendors.
Peer-to-peer coaching played a central role in the program’s success. Clean Energy Counselors helped demystify clean energy options, offer trusted guidance, and support neighbors through next steps. Participant reflections underscored the importance of clear, non-salesy, community-based support in building confidence and reducing barriers to action.
Together, these efforts show how local partnerships and neighbor-to-neighbor outreach can reduce energy burdens and help residents take an active role in the clean energy transition.
With support from a MassCEC EmPower grant, MassEnergize partnered with theFairmount Indigo CDC Collaborative (FICC) in Boston and Vineyard Poweron Martha’s Vineyard to identify and reduce the barriers that prevent low-income and English-isolated residents from participating in the clean energy transition.
What We Accomplished Together
The project moved through three distinct phases:
Phase 1: Identify – We conducted surveys with both communities to learn exactly where and how residents get their information and how they prefer to be contacted.
Phase 2: Design & Develop – Building on survey results, we developed multilingual outreach materials, including flyers and social media posts tailored for Spanish and Portuguese-speaking residents. We also launched targeted social media campaigns and utilized preferred communication channels to share information where it is most accessible for community members.
Phase 3: Deploy & Evaluate – We tested these new strategies in real-time and conducted follow-up surveys to measure the impact of meeting residents where they already are.
Join Us for the Big Reveal!
We are so grateful for the support from MassCEC and the partnership of FICC and Vineyard Power. Their dedication has helped us build a stronger, more inclusive capacity for climate action across the Commonwealth.
