From Course to Conversation: A Climate Story on Kelp Forests

Curious what a finished Climate Story from the Framing the Conversation ‘Crash Course’ looks like?

As part of NNOCCI’s 7–week Crash Course, participants learn to tell powerful climate stories using science-based strategic framing tools, such as values, metaphors, and solutions. From riding public transit to supporting clean energy, the choices we make near and far from shore can protect ocean ecosystems. One participant turned this message into a climate story to spark conversation about kelp forests — paired with her whimsical underwater photography.

AZA Conference Meet-Up is Happening Now!

A cross-section of NNOCCI members are meeting up live and in person at week’s AZA conference in Tampa, FL. What are their hot topics? How many were there? It’s all late breaking news—we look forward to sharing out those details in next month’s newsletter.

In the meantime, is there another gathering or event where you’d like to see a NNOCCI meet-up? Let us know! Our regional coordinators are on the ground and ready to make things happen for and with you.

Help Us Choose Our First Shirt Design

We’ve heard you loud and clear: for years, members have asked if we’d ever sell shirts so they could show their NNOCCI pride. Well, the time has come!

This October, during our Climate Hope & Action Month, we’re launching our very first shirt campaign through Bonfire. Bonfire makes it easy for NNOCCI to raise proceeds that support our programs, while also preventing waste; shirts are printed and shipped only when they’re ordered.

Here’s where you come in. We want your input to decide which shirt designs to launch. We’ll start with two or three options, and hopefully add more over time. Please complete the short survey linked below by Tuesday, September 30.

Thank you for helping us shape this new way to share NNOCCI pride. Stay tuned in October for the launch!

Why are we using Ranked Choice Voting (RCV)?

This survey uses ranked choice voting, so you can rank your favorite designs instead of picking just one. This way, the final choices best reflect what the whole community supports - the same reason RCV is so powerful in making decisions about big issues like climate change.

Building Community, Together.

NNOCCI thrives by connecting audiences to action through shared values. As members, you can help us build our community of practitioners in currently underrepresented populations by leveraging existing relationships within these spaces.

Which communities are we trying to reach? Historically underrepresented demographics as well as people and places currently unrepresented in our membership (ex. the states of Arkansas, Kansas, North and South Dakota).

Why are we asking you to help? Research shows that word of mouth is powerful. NNOCCI invites everyone to join the conversation, and people are more willing to accept an invitation from someone they know.

Unsure how to start the conversation? This article might help.
