December 2023 Newsletter
Letter from the Director
Wow, I’m so excited, things are really rolling along at GTABQ and 2024 looks bright for our humble operation!A big thanks to superstars Darcy Smith, our Program Officer, and Alma Kassim, our Community Engagement Officer, both are going gangbusters with making GTABQ a dynamic, impactful organization.
Darcy has now completed 3 International Visitors Program (IVLP) visits from start to finish – that means an initial proposal, acceptance and then all the planning – she is bringing her awesome organizational skills but also adding her own insights and ideas to create innovative and impactful programming!
Alma is also proving her mettle having put together a regular and impactful social media campaign and taking on the daunting task of populating and developing our new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform. In fact, this month’s newsletter is uniquely hers, including creating and sending it from that new system!
We’ve also taken on another Intern, Naz Sousesen, a student at Menaul High School who is here studying from Turkey.Naz is working with Darcy in supporting our program needs.
2024 will be a busy year for us with our plans to host 400-450 IVLP visitors, 5 new fellows from the Young Transatlantic Innovation Leaders Initiative (YTILI) in the spring. So, we’re going to have lots of opportunities to host, accompany, guide and just have some fun being citizen diplomats with these amazing emerging world leaders!
We can’t do this without you, thank you for helping us demonstrate that, “Bringing countries together above their conflicts requires great minds and great hearts.”
― Amit Ray, Nuclear Weapons Free World - Peace on the Earth.
Happy holidays to all!!!

Our first IVLP delegation, focused on Empowering Ethnic Educators from Burma, had an eye-opening experience in New Mexico. They met with KatieAnn Juanico the assistant secretary of New Mexico Public Education Department Indian Education program, who shared about the Indian Education Act, which focuses on helping Native American students with their culture and education.
They also learned from Mike May who works for Future Focused Education about creative ways to tackle school issues and heard from students at Menaul School about education in different countries. Lastly, Barbara Peterson form Albuquerque Public Schools emphasized the importance of seeing students beyond tests.
Beyond these meetings, the group enjoyed local celebrations like Dia de los Muertos and explored the vibrant art scene in downtown Albuquerque with GTABQ member Marie Trigg.
Our second IVLP delegation focused on Empowering Women in Leadership from Ecuador. This group of extraordinary women met withCoalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW), where leaders like Jolene Holgate and Nicole Begay are working hard to stop violence against Native women. At the Hispano Chamber of Commerce, Raquel Benavidez and graduates shared how they support women in business.
At WESST (Women’s Economic Self Sufficiency Team), Agnes Noonan and Valeria Olave help women start and improve their businesses. They also heard from accomplished leaders like Yolanda Montoya-Cordova, Emilie Di Angelis, and Rayellen Smith about their experiences in public office during an Emerge alumni panel.
