Deborah Roberts on Deborah Norville

This Women's History Month, we celebrate the 2024 EFM Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, Deborah Norville, with the words of her friend and colleague (and fellow BFOA Board Member), Deborah Roberts:

"To know Deborah Norville is to know what the epitome of major success looks like in an industry where it can be elusive, where struggle and competition can sometimes steal big dreams. But hers is the story of a true, indefatigable broadcast journalist in its fullest. Fearless under pressure, her news instincts of tenacity and determination [are] always on display. Deborah brings intelligence, charm, spontaneity and grit to anything she does. A two-time Emmy Award winner, she has contributed her talent and her knowledge to the highly rated Inside Edition for 29 years and counting.

Deborah Norville never stops asking questions, and she never feels satisfied that she's done enough to share information with her audience, with college students who are hungry to follow into her footsteps, or to help [broadcasters through her service on the BFOA Board of Directors]. She is truly a journalist’s journalist."

Thank you, Deborah, for all you do for your colleagues, the BFOA, and the broadcasting community! Congratulations!

Luke and Terrie's Story

Luke Commare got his start in TV in 2004, and like all of us, he loved it. In January 2020, Luke unexpectedly suffered several seizures and was diagnosed with grade 4 Glioblastoma. His wife, Terrie, became a full-time caretaker for Luke and their four children. The Broadcasters Foundation approved a monthly grant for the Commares. Unfortunately, after battling cancer for 30 months, Luke passed away in 2022. The BFOA continues to support the Commare family during this difficult time.

“It’s been huge. Keeping what [my kids] consider normal was one of the most important things ... and I couldn’t do that without the Foundation grant money. Knowing that there’s people out there that care about people they don’t event know ... I can tell you, it’s changed our world.”

In Memory of Norman Knight

Norman Knight dedicated his life to helping others. Through Knight Quality Stations, he was a pioneer in recognizing the value of FM stations. In 1996, he received the BFOA Golden Mic Award, one of many other honors he received throughout his career. His spirit will carry on in our mission to help broadcasters in need.
